Product Description

Album Description

First-ever official CD compilation of this West Coast R&B hero’s late 50s and early 60s recordings. Features every one of Berry’s Flip recordings – including the original version of ‘Louie Louie’, naturally! - and each of the recordings he made with maverick LA producer Gary Paxton. Many of the Paxton masters are released here for the first time, while several of the Flip cuts are also making their official CD debut. Package includes many previously unseen photos from the Berry family archives and is annotated by the world’s # 1 "Louie Louie" expert Eric Prodehl.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Louie legend begins here, 13 April 2011
This review is from: Have 'louie' Will Travel: 1956-1962 Recordings (Audio CD)
Not for the first time a B side becomes the hit though it was to be for others some 7 years later when the Kingsmen took it to the summit.
Today there's said to be at least 1000 versions of a song which Berry cobbled together from 2 others when it was the B side of his version of You are my Sunshine.
Here for the first time is the complete Flip recordings.
Berry was on a number of hit records as the bass singer on quite a few doowop records in the 50s on his next label Modern

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but forgotten, 5 Nov 2004
By Ron Heck - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Have 'louie' Will Travel: 1956-1962 Recordings (Audio CD)
I heard about a 20 second clip of the original Louie, Louie on an episode of Northern Exposure. I then downloaded the song of iTunes (its no longer available on iTunes, however) and really liked his sound. So, I found this on Amazon, but with no sound clips, or reviews, I pretty much had to buy it on faith and impulse. I'm glad I did. This is a very expansive 30-track look at his career and it includes a great biographical booklet that provides a story for just about every track that is on here. The music is a very good blend of soul music and doo-wop from the late fifties and early sixties, and the sound quality is fantastic. He never had a big hit, even with his excellent rendition of Louie, Louie, but there are still a lot of great songs. Most notable are In a Real Big Way, No Kissin' and a Huggin', Well Done, Its All Right, and Have Love Will Travel (even though it's basically a retread of Louie, Louie, it's still a good song. Granted, there are some songs on here that don't work as well as others, especially those from his brief attempt at country, and it seems that after a while he was trying to find anything that would give him a decent hit. He did, after all, write a hit song that other people were making famous. But still with 30 songs, there is a lot to like on this disc.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Real Louie Louie, 11 Sep 2010
By Roy R Ricks Jr - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Have 'louie' Will Travel: 1956-1962 Recordings (Audio CD)
For anyone who has only heard the Kingsmen's version of Louie Louie Richard Berry is the man who wrote the song and first recorded it. The entire cd is full of very good R&B from the period. Also check out Have Love Will Travel. He wrote that one too.

Richard isn't eaxctly an unsung hero but most everything by him, and that's not much, is a keepsake.
