Book Description

25 Sep 2008 1846141761 978-1846141768 1st Edition
This is possibly the most entertaining, surprising and enjoyable film book ever written. Thomson set himself the near-foolhardy task of writing one page each on 1000 of the films that he has particularly liked – or in some cases, abhorred. Some half-million words of funny, vigorous, wayward prose later, we are all the happy beneficiaries of his deranged labour. Always unexpected, never repetitive, ‘Have You Seen…?’ can be read consecutively – from Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein to Zabriskie Point – or dipped into over many years, and it is a masterclass in how to write about films and how to love them. Sometimes Thomson will be interested in the director, sometimes in the culture that made such a film possible at such a time, sometimes in the stars (always in the stars, to be honest), and sometimes even in the outrageous cynicism and corruption of most financial backers. ‘Have You Seen…?’ is crammed with great love stories, westerns, musicals, war stories, comedies, and dramas. It is as in awe of film noir as of silent farce, and adores Hollywood but also favours British, Japanese and European cinema: camp disasters, kitsch and pretention hold no fears. If Thomson has a bottom line it is his incredulity that so much that is so enjoyable and moving and worthwhile was ever made at all – and that thanks to DVD we can now watch it forever. ‘Have You Seen…?’ will redirect how you spend your evenings for the rest of your life – for the better.

Product Description

Review

'Have You Seen?, which contains characteristically eccentric assessments of copper-bottomed classics, obscure cult pleasures and interesting disasters, proves to be an absolute delight ... The author's irrepressibly playful approach to criticism runs through this essential volume and helps elevate its status to that of literature.'
-- Irish Times

'Age and experience have not jaded his passion for the wonder of cinema one whit, nor his boundless appetite to consume more of it ... This book will long bear re-reading, teasing readers to see films they have not yet seen, and making them reflect again on those they have' -- Telegraph

'An Oscar-worthy Christmas gift for any film fan'
-- Metro

'Brilliant commentary that combines the idiosyncratic and authoritative as only Thomson can do' -- Molly Haskell

'David Thomson is the world's leading sage about film ... It's a book to have on your reference shelf ... it's hardly been out of my hands for two weeks, and it's a constant source of fascination and pleasure to see what Thomson says about Rear Window or Don't Look Now ... It's like having the most film-literate pal you can imagine sitting beside you in a multiplex, showing off his knowledge, provoking you to agreement or (more likely) fury.' -- John Walsh, Independent

'He's the Man Most Likely To Have Seen Everything ... there is a lot to like about Thomson'
-- Russell Davies, Sunday Times

'One of the great pleasures of cinephilia is reading David Thomson. No one who writes about film is more adroitly encyclopedic or a more skillful provocateur. This huge collection is filled with delights for both the casual reader who wants to discover new and old treasures and for the seasoned cinephile who enjoys having his views challenged and expanded by the keenly analytical Dr. Johnson of the cinema.' -- Joseph McBride

'There's a scepticism in Have You Seen...? that gives a reader a great sense of trust, and a sense of a writer seeing all movies at once, that allows Thomson to go from a gesture to a judgement on the country at large without turning his head. It's not only a new kind of movie book; it's a new kind of conversation.'
-- Greil Marcus

'This book sets the bar. There isn't a more intelligent, insightful and provocative guide to individual movies in the world' -- Nigel Andrews, FT

'Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful ... Thomson's writing is ... full of magical effects ... What Thomson does not know or feel about films is not worth knowing or feeling ... every piece here, pithy and engaged, is like listening to an intelligence so deft and enraptured with its subject that it has become almost musical' -- Nick Lezard, Guardian

5.0 out of 5 stars David Thomson does it again 12 Feb 2009
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have read everything David Thomson has written, even changing my Sunday newspaper to one he wrote for, and this time he has exceeded himself. Unlike most other critics he realises that a diet of Fellini, Bergman, Antonioni etc. is not enough. We also need the roughage; Abbott and Costello, B noir movies, Tyrone Power swashbucklers et al. Thomson has the ability to turn the base metal of this fare into gold, devoting the same insight and intellectual rigour as he does to the acknowledged masters. This book covers all the bases. One complaint; it should have been 2000 films.

5.0 out of 5 stars The film book you've been waiting for! 1 Feb 2009
Format:Paperback
I bought this book on the strength of knowing David Thomson's 'The New Biographical Dictionary of Film' The dry academic title gives little indication of the liveliness and personality that comes out in every entry in this book. That same personality is impressed on every page in "Have You Seen . . . ?" Each film discussed is given its own page and each page is a personal description backed up by the knowledge in depth that makes Thomson such a convincing guide to film.

The range of films that Thomson describes is not limited by a conventional view of 'Great Movies' and he goes out of his way to describe a range of gneres so that unless you are Thomson himself you are bound to find something new that his description makes essential viewing.

He writes well with an authority with is not intimidating but inviting.

If you like movies and you respond to stimulating perception then Thomson's book is an essential part of your film library

1.0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THE KINDLE VERSION OF THIS BOOK 1 Oct 2010
By IHS
Format:Kindle Edition
PLEASE NOTE: THE ONE STAR IS FOR THE KINDLE VERSION AND NOT A REFLECTION ON THE QUALITY OF THE BOOK

This is an excellent book. But to have presented it in the Kindle format with no contents page means it is not a book that one can dip into, as I'm sure David Thomson intended. The only way to navigate it is page by page (even with the smallest font this means two screens per entry). So if you're on 'There Will Be Blood' and want to go back to the entry on 'Ace in the Whole' or 'The Magnificent Ambersons', you're going to get cramp in your thumb from pressing the navigation button.

The Sopranos? Monty Python's Flying Circus? Are these movies? No. So why are they in this book? Could Thomson not think of enough films to make up his 1000? It's a shame. Read more
