honeycombs lead singer DENNIS D'ELL, was, i believe, one of our most underated singers. during the sixties he possessed a truly amazing pop vocal, fitting in perfectly with the songs he recorded, written by ken howard and alan blaikley (not forgetting joe meek and ray davies)! particularly on the band,s first album "THE HONEYCOMBS". A much underated LP of superb songs of which i have never grown tired of hearing, since i bought the album in 1971, aged 13. some are represented on this CD, but, i would urge anyone to try and get a CD copy of the first LP, now since deleted, by both SEQUEL and REPERTOIRE lables. denny de,ll was not widely known for his guitar ability, of which i saw first hand several times, including an "upclose and personal" gig he did, when he ran his own pub in essex. he matured into a marvellous blues singer, performing with the "SOUTHSIDE BLUES BAND". He would also deliver some fine SANTANA guitar licks, which displayed his versatility as a talented musician. dennis died last year (2005), of cancer, leaving behind not nearly enough recorded material worth his talent. listen to this and other cds , and you may see what i see !

The Sherabons (as they were originally known) comprised Dennis D'ell (vocals), Anne Lantree (drums), John Lantree (bass), Alan Ward (lead guitar) and Martin Murray (rhythm guitar) - Peter Pye later replaced Martin.

Pye records signed the group on condition they use the name Honeycombs so that's what they became. Their first record, Have I the right, went all the way to number one in the summer of 1964 but subsequent releases made only limited impact. The next two singles (Is it because, Something better beginning) just made the UK top forty. Their fourth single (That's the way) made number twelve but the momentum had been lost and the group faded into obscurity.

This compilation includes all the hits, however minor, and a selection of their other recordings. If you enjoy sixties pop music, you are likely to enjoy the music here although (as you might expect) the outstanding track is Have I the right. You can, of course, obtain that track on a various artists compilation (its not difficult to find) if you prefer.

Easy Listening 22 May 2011

The Honeycombs seem to stay on the top of the charts for a short period, but some songs never fade with time as we all know with rock and roll still been played on the radio. I have brought this cd for a song and one day I will stop and play it all the way through
and listen to some I haven't heard of before, I think it was worth the price I paid for it and I have no regrets buying it.
