Book Description

4 Mar 2004
What do men run away from? Not war, not physical hardship, but the day-to-day emotional demands of impossible domestic situations. That's women's work. This is a story of female courage, where black comedy turns to disturbing pathos revolving around the rights of an indomitable woman (20030513)

Excellent book about grandmother's descent into dementia and the effect it has on the different members of her family. The book is both funny and very sad, and shows the huge impact of the disease on the whole family.

Don't expect a recipe of how to deal with Granny's dementia. But you can feel comforted by the fact that your thoughts are not taboo, as you will find them reflected in the views of the family members who care for Granny during her mental and physical decline.

Mercifully hilarious in parts this is a bitter sweet companion while you or your friends are going through similar times. Perhaps even a wake up call to reform our current public ways of dealing with senile dementia!?

5.0 out of 5 stars Holistic writing 26 Feb 2000

I've looked after many elderly people in my life, being a nurse, but I've never had so much understanding as after I had read this book. It's one thing to be able to nurse elderly patients but to understand what each different relative is going through is another thing altogether. Margaret Forster illustrates this perfectly - Thank you!
