Product Description

Product Description

First published in 1967 and re-issued in 1983, I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream contains seven stories with copyrights ranging from 1958 through 1967. This edition contains the original introduction by Theodore Sturgeon and the original foreword by Harlan Ellison, along with a brief update comment by Ellison that was added in the 1983 edition. Among Ellison's more famous stories, two consistently noted as among his very best ever are the title story and the volume's concluding one, "Pretty Maggie Moneyeyes". Since Ellison himself strongly resists categorization of his work, we won't call them science fiction, or SF, or speculative fiction or horror or anything else except compelling reading experiences that are sui generis. They could only have been written by Harlan Ellison and they are incomparably original.

By Kenneth F. Mcara TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
Harlan Ellison's writing was long unavailable in this country, so we should be grateful that much of it is now back in print.

This is probably his best, and most famous, collection of short stories and dates from 1967. The title story is magnificent, and is allegedly one of the 10 most reprinted stories in the English language. Ellison apparently wrote it at a single sitting and then only had to make minor editorial changes before presenting it for publication. In it, 4 men and 1 woman are all that are left of the human race, along with an omniscient and omnipotent supercomputer. Without giving anything of the plot away, the title of the story becomes its final line.

Ellison can be difficult to read. At his worst he can be hectoring, self-pitying, confrontational and vengeful. He has said, for example, that he gives the names of people who bullied him at school to characters who die particularly unpleasant deaths in his stories. At his best, however, he is imaginative, inspiring and extremely thought-provoking, having also written some of the finest episodes of Star Trek - The Original Series - Series 1 - Complete - Remastered [DVD] [1966](The City on the Edge of Forever) and The Outer Limits - The Original Series - Vol. 1 [DVD] (Soldier; Demon with a Glass Hand). This collection mostly represents the latter aspect of this talented SF writer.

One of the-- if not THE-- greatest short story ever 27 Feb 2010
By Michael Szeles - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Buy everything that Harlan Ellison has ever wrote. He is the greatest short story writer of the 20th Century and the 21st century, a true American treasure, and "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream" is utterly amazing, shocking, hopeful, and makes a reader feel absolutely, fully human. The world is a better place for this book, and people are better for having read Ellison.
