Product Description
Journeying to the dusty heartlands of America's "Bible" Belt, Nicholas Guyatt goes in search of the truth behind a startling development - that fifty million Americans have come to believe the apocalypse will take place in their own lifetimes. They're convinced that, any day now, Jesus will snatch up his followers and spirit them to heaven. For the rest of us, things are going to get very nasty indeed: massive earthquakes, devastating wars, not to mention the terrifying rise of the Antichrist. But true believers aren't just sitting around waiting for the Rapture. They're getting involved in debates over abortion, gay rights and even foreign policy. Are they devout or deranged? Why do they seem so cheerful about the end of the world? And does their influence stretch beyond the Bible Belt - perhaps even to the White House? Strange, funny and unsettling in equal measure, "Have a Nice Doomsday" uncovers the apocalyptic obsession at the heart of the world's only superpower.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well written and enlightening book, 11 Jul 2007
By K. Saunders (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I've just finished reading this book and it's raised quite a few questions in my head about exactly how much influence 'apocalyptic Christians' have in Washington. Answer - more than you'd think.

Nicholas Guyatt's book is very well written: imparital, funny in parts, intelligent and well-reasoned and he gets to meet the majority of the key players in the field of End Times Christianity.

He also combines interviews and current affairs with sections on apocalyptic Christianity in history (from England in the 1600s) and explains how the believers in the US got to what they believe and how.

The book's relatively up to date (having been published in 2007) although I would love there to be an addendum now that Tony Blair has been made the special envoy to the Middle East. If you read this book, you'll know straight away what these particular Christians will think of it!

Overall, a well-written and interesting look into an area of Christianity that appears to be big in the US but is barely known over here, but may be impacting on World affairs in a scary way. Very good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, useful and important, 11 Aug 2007
By Grendel97 (Norway) - See all my reviews
Author Nicholas Guyatt book sports a rather telling frontpage photo and logo, with a lone church standing tall on a field among (holy?) explosions.
Guyatt writes an entertaining book, but at the same time he never lets the historian stray too far away. Although the main focus in the book is on key american writers and players in the field of end-days-prophecies, he gives a broad historical backdrop to his discussion of the topics.
Among the people he interviews and/or discusses is John Hagee, Randall Price, David Reagan, Tim LaHaye and Joel Rosenberg. The "Left Behind" books are, unsurprisingly, a main topic in the book.

One of the strenghts of the book is also one of its aims, to examine the link between key players within the christian doomsday movements and political power. Guyatt does a fine job looking at the paradoxes and potential dangerous combination of those two sectors.
My only complaint about the book is that it doesn't actually try to answer the question posted on the front page, "why million of americans are looking forward to the end of the world". The book is about key players and individuals, portrayed in a historical backdrop, not on mass movements or groups.

If you're looking for an easy read into a topic which is hailed in some medias as "highly relevant for world affairs", this is a nice start.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 16 Feb 2008
By Paul Holland (London, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Unfortunately in this occasionally entertaining book Nicholas Guyatt does not answer the principle question in the books title.
Essentially this is the writer describing his meetings with several individuals in the USA who beleive in a (soon) to happen biblical apocalypse coupled with a potted history of apocalytic thinking (which at best could be described as sketchy and at worst inaccurate and biased).
There is little evidence to back up his theory that 50 million americans are looking forward to the end of the world and despite his efforts to find some absolutely no link between apocalyptic thinking and present US foreign policy.
Often sneering and keen to brand all evangelical Christians as apocalyptic nutcases this book misses the opportunity to delve into a fascinating subject.
