Product Description

Product Description

These legendary sessions feature some of the most spirited and funny music ever recorded by Michael Hurley, Peter Stampfel and the neglected Jeffrey Frederick, with the most sympathetic backing found on any of their records: the cameraderie between the musicians fairly pours from the speakers. One of the New York Times Top 20 LPs of 1976; Robert Christgau gave it an A+ in his Village Voice Consumer Guide. A wise, witty and wacky antidote to the pervasive mellowness that was infecting so much folk music at the time. The CD includes new '70s reminiscences by Peter Stampfel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally Musical Freakout 6 Nov 2012
By murchu
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this to replace an ageing copy which was already showing signs of severe mental illness after several years of play. For Rounder to bring folk such as Jeffrey Fredericks, Michael Hurley and the Holy Modal Rounders together on one recording might have seemed totally suicidal for any producer, but not the case...it worked admirably. The recording is little short of a tribute to the musical zaniness of the hippie era. Fredericks was no respecter of grey-suited conservatives, nor of their their equivalently unadventurous mentalities. What of the Holy Modal Rounders then...huh? Dammit, they murdered every cherished early Southern stringband recording which they found. Only Spike Jones and his City Slickers could have got away with that kind of musical vandalism! This amazing recording must be heard to be believed. Betcha Loudon Wainwright III has already played six copies of this meisterwerk to the point of destruction! Me... I'm only on number two!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best album ever 6 Jan 2006
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This is the one. Fantastic songs and such a good vibe throughout. I got this a few years ago and I'm now the biggest fan of these guys ever, although none of them have ever done anything quite like this. They just got together and it worked.

I've seen Michael Hurley and Peter Stampfel recently is tiny London clubs and they still play tracks from this and I think they'd be torn apart of they didn't. There are some new Rounders and Jeff Frederick CDs coming out through Jeffrey's widow. Could be good...

5.0 out of 5 stars My favourite album....EVER 18 Jan 2006
Format:Audio CD
Words cannot describe the joy that this album has brought me. I had the honour of meeting Michael Hurley at a gig in Belfast, with an audience of about 25 people and sang "The Jack-knife song" with him and a couple of others. Every song is a gem and the musicianship is absolutely top class. Anyone who can sing about the digestion of spaghetti and make it sound this good deserves to be praised. A glorious mixture of country, rock, jazz and insanity.
