' An excellently funny, moving novel-a text for our times' Independent

Product Description

Once tough, witty and self-reliant, Grandma is now increasingly unable to look after herself. She has always put her menfolk first, always been the carer, but now her family must care for her. They are filled with love and good intention, especially her daughter Bridget. But as Grandma gradually loses herself and the strain within the family soon begins to show, is love enough?

5.0 out of 5 stars Compassionate study of the impact of dementia on a family, 2 April 2002
By A Customer
Excellent book about grandmother's descent into dementia and the effect it has on the different members of her family. The book is both funny and very sad, and shows the huge impact of the disease on the whole family.

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolute MUST as a guide for senile dementia at home, 1 Oct 2006
By B. Shaw (UK) - See all my reviews

Don't expect a recipe of how to deal with Granny's dementia. But you can feel comforted by the fact that your thoughts are not taboo, as you will find them reflected in the views of the family members who care for Granny during her mental and physical decline.

Mercifully hilarious in parts this is a bitter sweet companion while you or your friends are going through similar times. Perhaps even a wake up call to reform our current public ways of dealing with senile dementia!?

5.0 out of 5 stars Holistic writing, 26 Feb 2000
By A Customer
I've looked after many elderly people in my life, being a nurse, but I've never had so much understanding as after I had read this book. It's one thing to be able to nurse elderly patients but to understand what each different relative is going through is another thing altogether. Margaret Forster illustrates this perfectly - Thank you!

5.0 out of 5 stars not just for those with dementia issues
I picked up this book from the bookshelf almost to rule it out. The subject matter is pretty depressing so I thought I'd give it a few pages, and if I didn't get into it (which I... Read more
