Classic traditional country, 11 Feb 2004
This review is from: Have I Got a Deal For You (Audio CD)
Reba recorded this album during the mid-eighties, when her style was very traditional country with plenty of fiddles and steel but no strings or other pop instrumentation. There are fine songs on this album, both ballads and up-tempo. Sad songs, happy songs, reflective songs - they're all here.
Perhaps the best of the lot is She's single again, a great song in which Reba gives a warning other women. Reba recorded this song unaware that Janie Fricke was also recording it. Janie's version was released as a single and made number two on the country charts. Some people think that Reba's version would have reached number one but nobody can tell. Janie was still a big name in country music at the time (though not for much longer) and her version, although more contemporary, is every bit as good as Reba's. I'm in love all over, Red roses won't work now, Only in my mind and Don't forget your way home are just a few of the other great songs here.
You have to appreciate traditional country music to love this, one of Reba's most traditional albums. Her other albums in a similar style included My kind of country, Merry Christmas to you and The last one to know.
