Lonely Planet- Havana 5 April 2009
By Spider Monkey HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER
As far as guidebooks to Havana go this Lonely Planet guide is simply outstanding. I have bought a couple of guidebooks and this one easily comes out on top. It starts with some colour plates in the front with gorgeous photography and some interviews with Havana residents to get the `inside scoop' on Havana. This is quickly followed by in-depth chapters on a variety of topics. These include, City Life, Arts, Music, Architecture, History, Sights, Walking and Cycling Tours, Eating, Entertainment, Activities, Shopping, Sleeping, Excursions, Directory and Language, all topped off with more colour plates with various maps that's you may need. This book is nothing if not comprehensive! The descriptions really give you a taste for Havana and whet your appetite and the style of writing is accessible and clear. This provides some useful tips and suggestions and should enable you to enjoy all Havana has to offer. Although the photography is pretty sparse compared to other guidebooks, this book is still worth a look for the information alone. I'd suggest you go straight for this guide as the others don't even seem to come close, but be aware the version I have was last updated in 2007 so things may have changed slightly. Well worth a look.

Feel free to check out my blog which can be found on my profile page.

Handy little guide 30 Jan 2009
By Herbie
This seems to be the same content as in the LP Cuba guide, so do not buy both. Although it is 2 years old, it was still accurate and the eating choices were good. Only problem was under sleeping, the Casas Particulares had very short descriptions and were not marked on the maps.

Swearing by Lonely Planet's profferings in the past, I picked this gem of a guidebook up in the airport en route to Havana and I really couldn't have done much better. I researched my holiday with the Time Out Havana - 3rd Edition and really wish I had used this guidebook instead.

The book is laid out in sections based on your activites, so if you're peckish, flip to the "eating out" section, if you fancy a Mojito and some cabaret, flip to the Entertainment and Activities sections and so on. Each section details the address, the prices, quality, dresscode etc so you will have a good idea of what to expect on arrival. Every now and again, the book features a specific place of interest (Hotel Nacional for example) with some history and a run-down of the culture you will find, I found this very interesting and added a depth of knowledge to the visit I might not have had previously.

I walked as much of Havana as was feasible and found the "Walking Tours" very useful, whether you are strolling around the Necropolis San Cristobal looking for the graves of the rich and famous or simply just trying to plan a jog along the Malecon in the morning sun, the maps are tip-top and upto date (As of my visit in November 2010). There are a quite a few phrases thrown in to boot that will get even the most rudimentary of Spanish speakers by in day-to-day life and there are numerous explanations of the way Havana works - useful as it's usually very very different to European living.

All in all - this guide was far more informative than the Time Out guide, albeit with fewer pictures, but having this in my back-pack I felt ready to take on almost anything in Havana. Highly recommended!!
