Very good. Recommend it, If you have Squirrels in your loft or Rabbits in your Rhododendrons this is the machine, couple of Apple cores and a carrot have worked a treat. Recommend you put something under the trap if you are trapping in the loft.

Easy to set, well thought out..

Its good!

Solid trap that confines any critter its sized to capture 8 Feb 2012

Without reading the Instructions, I Had this Trap set up and working in 10 minutes. For the mechanically challenged, better illustrations would be helpful, but the instruction are thorough. Once understood, it will take 5 minutes to set up or break down for storage. I just leave it assembled. My only criticism and four star rating was due to the pressure required to trip it. Before I started making adjustments it took 4.25 oz on the foot pad to activate. A small Squirrel or Chipmunk would get a free meal. After some "tweaks" I had it tripping at just over 2 oz If you understand fulcrums you'll see how to do this adjustment. Also it helps to line the floor from entrance to foot pad with 1/16" plastic sheet or heavy paper(soda carton or cereal box) as some animals dislike walking on wire mesh. I placed the trap in a 30 gal trash bag with the slack lightly folded on top that allows the trip handle to move unimpeded and only exposes the entrance. Place in trafficked area (and canceled) if possible. The plastic bag is good for controlling a mess or if you happen to live in Skunk country. Caught the first feral Cat within 30 minutes after setting it!

Complete failure 18 Jun 2012

On the positive side I was pleased with the service I received from Amazon when I ordered the Havahart 1090 Easy Set Trap...it was shipped immediately and was delivered well within the time advertised. I was also pleased with the price, which was approximately $20 cheaper than I had seen at a local chain outdoor center. I read several reviews on this trap prior to purchasing it and was a little concerned that some people complained that it was difficult to assemble...I must admit though that I was surprised by this when I began to assemble it, because it took me less than 5 minutes to put everything together (minimal parts) and have it in working order. The directions, though not really needed, seemed adequate for people with little or no mechanical ability. I also like the ease of setting and the small light weight size of the trap...just perfect (I thought) for squirrels.

On the negative side, I'm disappointed to report that the trap did not work. During the two days I had the trap I caught 5 squirrels...and every single one of them escaped from the trap. At first I found this perplexing and thought maybe something had accidentally tripped the trap from the outside...but on two occasions I physically observed the squirrels pushing the trap door up and squeezing out of the gap to freedom...very annoying I assure you. Upon closer inspection I discovered that the trap door could indeed be lifted approximately two inches before the retaining spring prevented it from moving any further...just enough to allow any squirrel to escape.

It was not clear to me if the trap I bought was defective or if this is a design flaw in the the Havahart 1090. I contemplated modifying the trap by adding some weight to the door, but decided this would be defeating the purpose...and so I returned the trap to Amazon and will order a different trap with the credit.

Tips for Catching Bunnies 22 Feb 2014
By Hubschrauber - Published on Amazon.com

I got this trap to capture rabbits that were chewing my lawn down to the roots in places, and killing the lawn in other places with their droppings. Although my son was an advocate, my wife and daughter weren't too happy with the pellet-gun approach, and I still needed the rabbits to be gone, so this was the next best option. Fortunately for the girls, and the rabbits, the trap did its job quickly and effectively. Here are a few comments and tips from my brief experience (so far) using this trap...

* The trap came out of the box, and was fully set up in about 5 minutes. It is very simple to see how it is supposed to go together, even though the instructions aren't very clear.
* An empty plastic fruit cup, nylon-zip-tied to the inside of the back wall of the trap, helps hold the bait in place. Otherwise it can be a bit of a challenge to put the trap where you want it and then position the bait inside the trap.
* It works well to locate the trap a within a few feet of where a rabbit would pass, if you can find out where that would be. In my case I placed the trap near the rabbit's path to and from a hole under the edge of a concrete stoop.
* A chopped up apple core proved effective as bait (and you can eat the rest of the apple yourself). Lettuce, celery, carrots, etc. weren't tempting enough so those baits just dried out before attracting any interest from a rabbit. I guess the bait needed to be more tasty than grass.
* After a rabbit was captured, draping an old bath towel over the trap kept the rabbit from freaking out (as much) while I transported it to a nearby open space to release it.
* A small spring clamp helped assure the door stayed closed until I was ready to open it and let the bunny out. The locking mechanism worked well enough but I didn't need a bunny loose in my car, so I took an extra precaution. If you don't have any spring clamps, just search for "spring clamp" on Amazon for dozens of choices.
* Picking a place to release the rabbit where there are plenty of rocks and small shrubs gave my daughter some confidence that the rabbit will have a fighting chance against the coyotes.

I wish I had also set up an night-vision, infrared, motion triggered, camera, so I could catch video footage of the rabbit going into the trap and then realizing it had been tricked. I am wondering if the rabbit approached it cautiously, or just ran right in to get the yummy apple core. I'm also curious how long it took for the rabbit to figure out it wasn't getting free, and to settle down until I came to take it to its new home. Maybe next time.

UPDATE:
The last rabbit that ventured into the trap was a little more frantic than the others. While I don't think the rabbit was seriously hurt, it had injured itself around the paws and mouth trying to escape. My guess is that there were enough rough, sharp edges on the trap to cause trouble as the rabbit attempted to bite or scratch its way free. This hadn't happened yet at the time when I wrote the original review, but it may inform someone's decision whether to buy, so I felt like I should add this update to mention it. Again, I don't think any permanent harm came to the trapped rabbit, so I'd probably still consider this product more humane than other means of extermination, but it shouldn't be expected to be perfect.

Squirrels be gone! 25 Mar 2011

This was a bit of a pain to assemble (those pins!), but so far, so good.

The squirrels in my yard are suckers for peanuts, or crumbles of suet, and I have trapped several this past week.

The slightly longer and larger 1090 seems to work better than the 1084 on the gray squirrels in my yard. They have to fully enter the trap to get to the bait, ensuring they trigger the door. With the smaller 1084, they seemed to wander in and out, eating the bait - of course, it might have been a faulty trap.

Three cheers for Havahart, and the humane removal of these annoying pests.

Love this 14 Oct 2013

Works great. Love the top handle so your hands are safe when releasing squirrels. Husband assembled it for me.
I have trapped 62 squirrels in 2 years that want to live in the attic of my tile roof home here in FL. Saw 2 more today so I will get busy.
Black sunflower seeds are the squirrels cocaine. A few outside and lots on the metal flap inside and in they go then I drive them all to the same place and release.
