Hauppauge Nova S2 and Nova T500 TV cards,
By
This review is from: Hauppauge WinTV Nova S2-HD/Satellite and HD Satellite PCI TV Tuner card (Accessory)
Update to review ...
I continue to find both tuner cards reliable and effective. I now use them with Windows 7 Media Center. Both work without a glitch and without needing additional software. I am very pleased and pleasantly surprised that Windows 7 works so well with the hardware... Original comments : I have recently installed both the Hauppauge WinTV Nova S2 and the WinTV Nova-500 cards in my HTPC. Both work very well with Mediaportal. The WinTV software that is delivered with the Nova-T-500 card is fine if you want to watch TV on your PC but it isn't really up to using as a home theatre product. The DVB-T card also works well with MS mediacenter. The S2 satellite card needs its own software. It comes bundled with Cyberlink Power Cinema 5.1 which is pretty poor and crashes if you try to tune to a HD channel. I tried a trial download of Power Cinema 6 which was much better and didn't crash but I really didn't want to pay for an upgrade when I have already paid for bundled software. In the event I opted for Mediaportal which is freeware and appears to knock the socks off both MS Mediacenter and Power Cinema provided you are prepared to spend quite a few hours setting it up. The Mediaportal software is great but the documentation hasn't quite kept up.

Fantastic HD Satellite receiver,

I've used this card in my media center PC, which is running Windows 7 Ultimate, alongside a Hauppage NovaT-500 for regular Freeview reception. The card works beautifully, adding hundreds of satellite channels, including BBC and ITV HD, with no headache. Do download the latest driver and install that BEFORE you set up Windows Media Center if you go this route as it's easier than adding as you don't have to find the transponder scan settings then. The card works great and the additional channels are fantastic, especially since there's no monthly charge ala sky.

Using it with MythTV :-),
This review is from: Hauppauge WinTV Nova S2-HD/Satellite and HD Satellite PCI TV Tuner card (Accessory)
Bought this to use it as part of a MythTV backend system. The OS was 64bit Ubuntu 10.04 system, and it was installed without incident. The only thing to remember is that you have to install the firmware for the hardware, which has to be downloaded to the device each time the system boots.
It is more complicated to set up a DVB-S system, compared to DVB-T as you have to mess around with Diseq settings (to do with polarisation of the LNB), but thankfully I had a knowledgeable friend (Hi Ken!) to help me. I still have a lot to learn about Myth, but I can now record programs easily, so that is half the battle :-) It is probably much easier to set up this card under Windows, but it was done in an evening or two with Linux (and I was busy doing other things, and not just Linux on both those evenings!!)
