3.0 out of 5 stars Not an out of the box solution, 12 Dec 2004
By A Customer
This is a digital TV tuner which means you can get all the Freeview channels (supposedly) including radio. Now I have Freeview already on my TV with no reception problems, in fact I can see the local TV transmitter from the bedroom and it's only five miles away. So it was with some confidence that I installed this card into the PC and looked forward to the same reception quality. Well, not a bit of it, in fact I couldn't even get one station tuned in. It turns out that I needed an aerial booster at 10db which are not too expensive, so I attached one of those. Well now I was getting channels when I scanned but not all of them. No matter what I did for some reason I couldn't get any of the ITV channels 1,2, and 3, or Channel 4 and a few lesser known ones. Anyway doing some research I found this unit is a bit of a bare bones affair and is a also a sandwich short of a picnic if you get my drift. The card relies on the CPU processor of the PC to to some of the work and doesn't have a built in signal booster (obviously).

Now you can buy a stand alone Freeview box for your TV at less than the price of this unit and as long as you are in a Freeview good reception area you can receive all the channels available, no problems. I don't understand why this unit is so lacking in the necessary components to make it work properly, it isn't that cheap to buy.

On the plus side the channels I do receive are brilliant and clear and the sound also. The unit also has a record and snapshot feature which work fine. Because of its reliance on the CPU you need a powerful PC for things to run smoothly, say one with at least a 2 gig processor.

Because of the shortcomings and the hassle it gave me I can only give it 3 stars (generous at that). Otherwise, and because of the digital picture quality and sound I have would have given it five.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for Media Center 2005?, 21 April 2005
By A Customer
I bought this card for the Media Center 2005 PC I was building to receive Freeview - the digital television service.
The device was easy to install and the drivers did not conflict with anything else. Initially I had trouble receiving most channels, but with the addition of a 10db tv amplifier and a properly shielded coaxial cable, I now receive them all (for my area).
I was disappointed to discover that I could not receive teletext or digital radio with this device, but I can live without them. If you're considering one for your Media Center PC, make sure you get model 909 - previous versions are not compatible.

Alternatively get an analogue card, such as the Hauppauge Wintv-PVR-150 or 250, and get a Freeview decoder box.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but not great!, 6 Sep 2006
This is my fist TV card, so i have limited frame of reference. However, i was very pleased with the card as a whole, but seriously, the software has got to be some of the worst ive ever seen, and i work in IT.

The best advice is yes, buy this card, its well made, and the quality is pretty damn good too, But, make sure you buy some new Tuner software!
