What a player!, 1 Mar 2005
This review is from: Hauppauge Portable Multimedia Player (Electronics)
Got this player last night and am finding it completely ace so far. In the box you get the player (obviously :)), a cleaning cloth, a snug fit soft case, two sets of video leads, a kick stand for proping the player up on a table, matching white earphones, a USB 2 cable and a bit of paper with the buttons labelled.
I've got Windows XP at home and it was recognised instantly and I was ready to copy stuff onto it. There is no need for file management software, just plug and play. On the hard drive you'll find a couple of folders, video, music, photos, all self explanatory.
The only downside I'd say is that you get no video converting software :( So if are having problems with converting a video into the right codec or there's no sound or whatever then you're on your own :( You can check out www.vcdhelp.com for info on video conversions etc which should get you going.
I'v got to say though, the screen is totally ace and movies really do look good. There are controls for brightness and stuff to alter the picture to your tastes. The record function is a simply record on/off and there is also a timer so you can set it to record 30/60/90/120/150/180/210/240 minute chunks but no timer delay.
Overall I've got to say I'm really impressed so far even though the build quality isn't 100% (about 90-95%) as it's made of mostly plastic but I'd much rather this than an Archos or Creative's new player (with it's rather poor screen and proprietry video format and no record option) because the screen is much much larger. As for the size, I'd say it's about the size of an A5 paperback book or a jotter pad (albeit a bit thicker) and isn't too heavy. Recommended, especially at this price!
