4.0 out of 5 stars Hauppauge DEC2000-t - Good but Slow 26 Nov 2002
Amazon Verified Purchase
Installation
I chose the Hauppauge DEC2000-t, because it could be directly connected to my PC. The first thing that struck me when opening the box was how small the unit was, about the size of a thickish paperback. All the necessary cables were included, USB, RF, scart etc. and a remote control. The power supply was external. Connecting everything together was relatively simple, and I opted to try it with a TV first. When switching on, it prompted me to press 'OK' before it went into scan mode, its progress monitored on screen. In all, it found 14 TV channels and six radio. Connecting to the PC was just as simple and worked without a hitch.

Operation
Using the unit with a TV, it is much the same as a digital satellite receiver, though you need to manually select the AV channel on the TV if you are using the scart lead, or tune into the video channel if using the RF cable. The current station is shown briefly in a blue information bar at the bottom of the screen. Pressing the green button toggles between this, then program synopsis, then signal quality. Using the unit on a PC, the software delivers an unbelievably clear picture, though is rather slow when changing channels. There is an option to record to hard drive while you watch - playback quality is almost as good as the original. There is a choice of watching TV in a resizable window, which lists the channels alongside, or in full screen mode.

Summing up
In general, picture quality is quite superb, though suffers from the occasional blip or picture and sound break-up on some of the weaker channels (similar to the effects of heavy rain on a digital satellite dish). The unit is a little slow on start-up, both on TV and PC.... Read more ›

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice box, naff software 13 Dec 2002
When connected to the TV, this box is excellent. However, the software provided for use on a PC is really basic. Many of the features available to TV users are not available on the PC. EG: Only the first line of the current and next programme description is shown! Also, there is no on screen display when viewing in full-screen and several buttons on the remote cease to function.

I had expected much more from Hauppauge because they have been making PC TV products for years. I just hope that over time they will release improved software.

Of course the ability to pause TV is a real benefit when connecting the DEC2000 to a PC, but if you intend to mainly watch TV through your PC you will likely become annoyed by the software.

My rating: 5 stars when connected to a telly, 3 when connected to a PC. So the average is 4 stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars What's with the software? 25 Jan 2003
By A Customer
The device itself is excellent, small size, okay(ish) remote control, easy to setup and use etc... but only when used on a TV set. It manages to tune pick up digital signals reasonably well, and i have successfully used it with an indoor arial, even though i generally get fairly naff analogue reception.

When plugged into my PC, I have found that not only is the software slow to load, it is prone to randomly freezing. Changing channels takes several seconds. In addition, the progam guide gets cut off after a single line. Also, make sure that you have a least a 700Mhz processor before you buy this product.

There has been numerous different reviews about this little box, but for me it's worked straight out of the box and appears to do everything it's advertised as being able to do.

Mine came with the ver 2.15A software, and I'm running it on a fairly aged PIII box under Windows 2000 and I've not experienced any installation problems, no lock-ups, or slow response times mentioned previously.

This is my first digital set-top box, so maybe I'm missing something here, but it's giving me great results. Video quality is certainly much better than I was getting through my analogue TV and the interface is fairly straight forward to operate. (The other bonus of course is the 34TV & 21Radio 'free' channels I am now able to receive.)

I had expected to have to upgrade my external (low gain) aerial which is about 30miles from the Winter Hill transmitter, however with a standard distribution amplifier (and decent coax cable), and I'm now getting about 85% signal strength and 100% quality reported on the DEC2000 for the weakest channels.

I've heard that the satellite version of this box (DEC3000s) is about to be released in this country too, which may be of interest to those looking at satellite reception but want the computer connectivity as well.

1.0 out of 5 stars Avoid It 14 Aug 2003
The initial installation was fine on both a laptop (WinXP) and direct to a TV (scart). Subsequently however i've had nothing but trouble. It refuses to reinitialise, with the unit consistently stuck in standby mode. The laptop has to be rolled back and reinstalled to get even a glimmer of performance. All in all i've had it for 2 months and only been able to use it successfully a couple of times. When/if it works, it's actually been good. But these occassions have been so rare as to make catching rainbows a far more likely prospect.

I specifically bought it for use as a mobile device and this is the last thing it is useful for - due to the inability to disconnect and reinitialise. If you only intend to plug it into one device (TV) and leave it installed, then it might be fine. If you hope to use it on a laptop as a mobile TV card, forget it. I've been back to Hauppauge, and had it upgraded and new drivers supplied. Upon return it's been stuck in standby mode ever since and is a total waste of space. As a TV card it makes a very useful doorstop (just). Given Hauppauge's far from glowing product reviews i would avoid this and any similar product they produce. Or at least wait until (if) they bother to sort it all out.
