Product Description

Product Description
Night after night, out there in the moonlight, Something was trying to get in at the bedroom window. A huge malevolent Something. Something not of this world. Inside, Toby Jugg, a wounded Battle of Britain pilot, thought first that he was hallucinating, then that he must be going mad, finally that this evil Something was real and striving to reach him. So begins what is probably Dennis Wheatley's most terrifying story of the supernatural. The struggle which ensues brought Toby unexpected help but also ungues treachery as it moves inexorably towards an appalling confrontation and seemingly inevitable catastrophe. No wonder Dennis Wheatley was called The Prince of Thriller Writers .

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book, 20 Oct 2005

This is a perfect example of how to write a novel in the first person (in this case, as a diary). The pace, tension and plot flow are fantastic, and even though the theme of the occult is one that Wheatley draws upon for many of his novels, there is enough substance and variation in this to make it unique, and without doubt a page turner. It is a great build up to a fantastic climax.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent read., 23 April 2002

The Haunting Of Toby Jugg is one of Dennis Wheatley's weirdest and best novels. A bed ridden fighter pilot fears he is losing his sanity. In fact he is being drawn into a battle of wills and a conflict with evil forces beyond his comprehension.

5.0 out of 5 stars not for arachnophobes., 18 Nov 2003

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
So much of Dennis Wheatley's stuff seems to have dated quite badly in this day and age, even his most famous work, "The Devil Rides Out", reads as deeply amateurish now. "The Haunting Of Toby Jugg" works though. It's told mainly in diary form, by an invalided war veteran, who begins slowly to believe that his staff are up to no good and mean to kill him. He's right of course (otherwise there'd be no story!), and he realises that nearly everyone around him is involved in a Satanic cult. When they realise that he's onto them, they unleash a series of particularly horrible ordeals on him, a lot involving spiders. Wheatley's characterisation is two-dimensional to say the least (it never was his strong point), but if you can ignore that this is a quietly effective little horror yarn.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Haunting of Toby Jugg
Dated in it's political outlook and indeed some of the views of the hero might not seem terribly PC these days but interesting because of it. Read more
