Book Description

17 Oct 2008
Scepter Rand is a beautiful psychic who heads up "The Spookies," a paranormal investigation team with a truckload of modern ghost-hunting equipment. Assisted by the spirit of her late butler, Fishwick, Spector and her two partners, ex-police officer Pete Brennan and wheeler-dealer Kevin Keeley, are hot on the trail of a dangerous poltergeist. Their investigation leads them to the northern moors of England and Melmerby Manor, a brooding 18th century estate overflowing with pirated DVDs. When the DVDs are swapped for a dead body, The Spookies team is fingered for the crime. Now they must race against time to prove their innocence by trying to make sense of ghostly text messages, crazed drivers determined to run them off the road and an enraged spirit seeking revenge for his untimely death. Their investigation draws them into a world of seedy mobsters, millionaire pirated movie producers, a gutter journalist looking for a story at any cost, and the grumbling spirits of an English stately home. Look's like just another night's work for The Spookies team in this supernatural mystery that will tickle your funnybone while doling out a healthy measure of goosebumps.

More About the Author

David Robinson is a Yorkshireman living on the outskirts of Manchester, northwest England, with his wife and a crazy Jack Russell Terrier named Joe (because he looks like a Joe).

David writes in several genres under different pseudonyms, but his mainstay is crime and mystery. In January 2012 Crooked Cat Publishing picked up the first of his popular Sanford 3rd Age Club Mysteries, The Filey Connection. Since then a further ten STAC Mysteries have been published by Crooked Cat (and the 12th is due soon) and more titles are planned for 2014 and 2015.

He also produces darker, edgier thrillers, such as The Handshaker, The Deep Secret and Voices; titles which are aimed exclusively at an adult audience and which question our perceptions of reality.

In a more light-hearted mood again, he uses the sledgehammer humour of his alter-ego Flatcap, to reflect on the absurdities of the world at large. Three Flatcap volumes are currently available for download.

As at June 2014, he is working on the 12th STAC Mystery, working title, Murder in the Family, and The Haunting of Melmerby Manor, has just been released. The first of a new series, The Spookies Mysteries, Melmerby Manor combines ghost-hunting with a whodunit. While not particularly frightening, there are scenes which may set the reader's hair on end.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great fun read 28 Feb 2009
Format:Paperback
The Spookies are an unlikely, but likeable, trio of heroes: a self-professed charmer and ex copper who doesn't believe in ghosts, a techno wide-boy who's afraid of them, and an aristo with a dead family retainer who aids her in her dealings with the spirit world.

An action-packed yarn full of mysterious messages and dodgy dealings, The Haunting of Melmerby Manor is also a humorous story with lively characters and with a dollop of foreboding thrown in for good measure.

2.0 out of 5 stars Spookies - not very. 31 July 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Not that inspiring. Rather a drag. Story was a bit laboured and the characters a bit weak. On the whole not particularly well written and rather drawn out.
