Dazzling and elegant,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Haunting (Puffin Books) (Paperback)
Like all Mahy's fantasies, this is both a thrilling supernatural ride and a sympathetic, thoughtful portrayal of family life. Adults, as always, are neither gods nor monsters (though at first it seems otherwise to Barney, the child at the centre of the story). The book is about learning the limits of adult power and the extent of children's power. It knows magic is hard and scary. If you find Harry Potter a bit banal, try this; it's far, far cooler.

A good read scary month of October,

This review is from: The Haunting (Hardcover)
Barney a nine year old boy is being haunted. He thinks it is Cole, his dead Greatuncle. He finds out that Cole was a " magician" and is not in fact dead. If you want to find out what happens next get the book!
I liked this because it was gripping, lots of detail and mystery. I recommend the book be read in the scary month of October.

Ghosts and more,
By Artemis (Norway) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Haunting (Puffin Books) (Paperback)
When his great uncle Barnaby passes away, a ghost appears for Barney. This is only the beginning. As he and his family leave for the funeral, he will learn that his relatives are more special than he could have imagined. Plenty of surprises in this one.
A nice read, though not up to the standard of Mahy's "Changeover". This is a book with plenty of surprises along the way. When I read this at age 10 or so, I found parts a bit slow but I liked it sufficiently to reread it.
