I see dead people!,

Spooky stuff! Thouroghly enjoyed reading about all of Scotland's ghost's local haunts. There are so many places that I didn't even know were haunted. The book was well written and informative, and ideal tour guide for seekers of the paranormal.

Spooky and Mysterious,

I must be honest and say I've never been too interested in the paranormal and the thought of going ghost hunting makes me want to crawl up behind a safe sofa somewhere but I'd heard of the author and knew he had written good books on the history of Scotland so I thought I'd give it a go.I was pleasantly surprised. Instead of it just being an over-written, fictional book of scary ghost stories each entry has been carefully written to include where the site is, the history behind it and any sightings that have been recorded. Some have first hand accounts and some are more general- leaving it up to the reader's imagination to figure out the mystery. The author writes in his introduction that he isn't a ghost hunter but that he's interested in true stories from real events- which in my mind makes the entries even scarier! While reading the book it struck me that it must be a hard thing to research as many of the places are no longer the same as they were and some of the people involved have not been around for centuries. I was amazed at the amount of sightings of Mary Queen of Scots- she really does get around! All I can say is if you enjoy hearing ghost stories this is the book that puts them into context and truely brings them to life- if you'll excuse the pun!

Not what I was expecting,
By
This review is from: Haunted Places of Scotland (Paperback)
I got this book earlier this week and was very disappointed. Having read about it in a Sunday paper. I thought it would provide details of the the actual events of sightings, when to go and look and what one could expect to see. In most cases it doesn't. Many of the entries have vague descriptions such as "the building is said to be haunted" or "there have been reports of unexplained noises". There doesn't seem to have been very much actual investigation into the less well known premises. This book would have been much better if the author had either done a lot more reasarch on the less well know premises, or just left out the less well known ones and concentrated on the more well known ones given in depth detail . By just saying where the building is and it is apparently haunted, it leaves the reader feeling short changed.
