This is a splendid book in a number of ways, and a joy to read - also an ideal coffee table book.
Firstly, the tales are varied in terms of content, and era. There are ancient ghost stories, and more recent ones which make one want to investigate the locations and find out for themselves.
The text is just the right length for dipping in to - you can read one or two spooky accounts at a time, or more.
The chapters are divided up by areas, and these are nicely introduced with well-presented maps. The photographs and pictures though, are another highlight of this book. They are superb, and so well chosen. The variation of atmospheric photographs, old and new, with wonderful lighting, are very impressive. Along with these we have old drawings, some black and white, and very old and characterful. There are also 'real' ghost photographs, which the reader can study with fascination as the apparitions are there to see. And character portraits, to add depth and identity to ghosts in the tales.
This is an excellent example of a book which has had a great deal of care and planning. The result is something which is hard to put down, and will lend itself to repeat readings - and highly curious friends.
