The following review is relevant to Usborne Supernatural Guides: Haunted Houses, Ghosts & Spectres (1979), part of the omnibus edition, Supernatural World:

Supernatural World (1979) comprises of three individual books titled Mysterious Powers & Strange Forces, Haunted Houses, Ghosts & Spectres, and Vampires, Werewolves & Demons. The books are published by Usborne, who released a similar run in the 1970s: The World of the Unknown: Ghosts, The World of the Unknown: UFOs, and The World of the Unknown: Monsters. Usborne are very good at compiling such books and I really enjoyed them as a child. In fact, they are part of what got me interested in horror and science fiction from a young age.

This particular book looks at legend and folklore concerning ghosts and spirits, vampires and werewolves, ESP and plenty of other strange happenings. The tales are from people or communities from all over the world, and from different periods in history, and the text is accompanied by some really good traditional style artwork (another detail that helped maintain my interest in these books). Each happening is explained - each story told - and then the writer explores the relevant folklore and beliefs of those who reiterated the tales.

Much of the book is grounded in fact - some simply myth and superstition - relating to these various cultures. Originally aimed at children, the books still hold interest and relevance to those adults who are fascinated by the paranormal and the unexplainable.

I had this book as a child and it terrified me. Why? Well, I read it cover to cover with great interest and was struck by the Red Ghost of Napoleon tale. Returning to my bedroom later that evening I opened the door to find my long lost copy of the Napoleon Ladybird book lying face-up on my bedroom floor! 40+ years later I still have no explanation for this. The ghost book was shut away in the spare bedroom and I never set foot in it for months. Only question is: dare I buy this book again?!?

I had this book when I was about ten years old. It scared me silly ! Then one day the book vanished and I never saw it again....until I ordered it from Amazon. There's something about this book that strikes a chord for me. I think it's the illustrations , they are well drawn and stick in your mind. It may be aimed for children , but if you're interested in ghosts I recommend this book.

As I had previously written, my friend had the set of Supernatural guides many years ago and when I came across them online I had to buy for old times sake. I remember the illustrations, beautifully vivid and they still are after many years. The writing a bit on the basic side but informative enough if brief.
