I spotted this as a free ebook for my Kindle, and do love a good ghost story so gave it a whirl. It's actually a very short book so a quick read, written in the style of a report (by 'the Author', which is the name he uses in the last chapter, referring to himself in the 3rd person which was a bit weird...!) of the Amherst Mystery detailing the supposed paranormal activity surrounding Esther Cox.
Is it truth or fiction? Either way, whilst it may have been racy when it was written (according to Wikipedia it was first published in 1888 and proved popular selling at least 55,000 copies), for todays readers I'm sure it will seem very tame. It did remind me of a film I watched not long ago called 'An American Haunting' (based on the novel The Bell Witch: An American Haunting, by Brent Monahan), which was very very similar and equally frustrating.
As a free book it was fine, a good quick read while I was waiting for a hair appointment. It was a new writer for me, which is always good, and the recommendations at the end of the ebook did introduce me to other new writers including Ambrose Bierce who I am looking forward to sampling.
