    About the Author

Rebecca Patrick-Howard's real biography isn't nearly as interesting as the one she's made up in her head so she'll leave you with that one:

At the age of 3, her family sold her to a band of traveling gypsies. Forced to become a bareback rider in the circus, she spent her younger years traveling the country, living out of suitcases and selling macrame keychains on the side. At the age of 16 she became a professional yodeler but, after winning the international yodeling competition in Switzerland at 19, decided to retire at the height of her career. Now, she and her husband (an organic rutabaga farmer from Wales) live in an isolated cabin in eastern Kentucky where they play with a local mariachi band every Friday night, are involved with a murder mystery dinner theater club, and enjoy making origami owls.

Every community should have someone who gathers and lovingly preserves the local folklore like Rebecca Patrick-Howard has done in this volume, and I hope that my home too will have someone who walks in her footsteps before modernization throws the tales of the rapidly disappearing vernacular into the dustbin of progress.
This is perhaps a rather unorthodox approach to get to know a new place, but I find myself rather curious to see Estill county, and wondering how large (and how crowded) it is. Having read the author's novel 'Taryn's camera' I can see where a lot of her inspiration came from, and the eerie photographs enhance the echoes of loss and memories of optimistic and livelier pasts. In one account, written in first person, the author figures herself, and the reader is caught totally off guard when tragedy hits in the concluding lines. Like a kick in the stomach the chapter closes without further comment, to something that no doubt changed her life forever, and that void did indeed haunt me long after I put the book down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Haunted Estill County 20 Oct. 2013

Don't read this book at night, in bed ! You may never go to sleep !! The author has a way of relating the stories that left me wanting more. Why, who, what, are just a few of the answers I was left looking for. So much so that I feel a need to visit this county, half a country away, and find these places to experience what the author describes. Unfortunately, I can only fill that need by reading the sequel, which thankfully the author provides. I can't wait to get her next book and I hope she will provide more after that one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Many stories escape from those hills. 8 Jun. 2014

I was born in Knott County, Kentucky and was raised in Perry County, Kentucky, just a little deeper in the hills than Estill County. I am well aware of the many stories and legends emanating from this area. Good to see some of them in print.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nicely Done Bit of Folklore and Mystery 25 Dec. 2014

I enjoyed this little book. I was born in Kentucky and lived for a time neighboring Estill County so the towns and countryside were very familiar to me and it was a nice nostalgic trip. Ms Patrick-Howard has a casual, laid-back style very suited to her subject and to the people she writes about - easy, pleasant reading. She has written a second one - going to order that one too. The pictures are very well chosen to go along with the stories - some of which are genuinely creepy.

4.0 out of 5 stars I purchased this book as a paperback when I first heard about it on Facebook 23 Jun. 2014

This is not a genre of books I would normally choose to read, but because I grew up in Estill County,
I found it most interesting to read. I learned a lot about how places are believed to be "haunted",
and how some would investigate to see if they saw of heard any evidence of this.
I think it is well researched and the author does keep you interested in finding out
how her story is going to work out.
I also purchased the 2nd or Sequel on a Kindle, and have the first book on Kindle, also.
Both of them will keep you reading, and they are not one long story, but many stories that
have happened to people that lived in this area.
I'm glad to have them, and thank the author for writing them,
