Biography

A quick glance at the fifth Epic album by Chicago-based rock trio Chevelle may give their legions of longtime fans pause. Sci-Fi Crimes song titles like “Roswell” and “Highlands Apparition” have the same guys who delivered 2004’s dynamically crunchy This Type of Thinking (Could Do Us In) and the melodic heaviosity of 2007’s Vena Sera gone conspiracy-theory ... I can't remember how I heard about Chevelle, I think it may have been all the way back in 2002 whilst listening to online radio. They quickly became one of my favourite bands, and I have to keep an eye on Amazon new releases and Wikipedia to find out if there is any new material as they are not hugely popular in either the UK or Norway, where I now live.

The riff on opening track of Face to the Floor is powerful and a brilliant album opener and I personally heard it and thought, wow, I think it is enough for most fans of the genre to buy this album on hearing that allowed, I do not think they would be disappointed if they did. Followed by Same Old Trip, it sets the tone for the albumthis is one of the strongest album openings I've heard in a while. The album is full of brilliant riffs, chorus's you can sing along to at the top of your voice, music to pound the streets to, but it also has its softer melancholic moments and this gives the album great balance. Petes voice has been compared to Maynard Keenan in the past, but over the last few albums his voice has become more reognisable as his own as it has matured.

Brilliant.

I love every single one of their albums and this is something different yet similar again. Those who know Chevelle will be used to the aggression and addictive riffs mixed with rocking drums and bass. Pete usually uses a 50/50 mix of roaring growls/screams and well-pitched melody but in this album he barely screams or shouts and yet it still feels just as aggressive, but in a more controlled way where the songs always simmer and spit but never lose control. This is a real progression for me and the riffs sound better than ever, the bass heavier, the vocals more beautiful and yet more aggressive and the drums perfect and fist-pumpingly awesome as usual. Buy it! Buy all the others too! No two albums are the same but all sound like Chevelle

I'm a massive Chevelle fan, and they're one of the few bands I'll pre-order an album blind. As far as I'm concerned, they've not put out a bad album to date. Hats Off To The Bull is no exception. I won't run through every track, but if you liked their previous albums, you won't be disappointed with this one.

They've moved their sound on a little, but not too much. It's a touch lighter than previous albums, but that's not to say there aren't a few face melters on the track listing. Face to the Floor is classic Chevelle, and you won't be sorry.

Is this as good as their previous albums? Personally, I would have to say no. Mainly because the last couple albums (to me at least), were some of my all time favourites. Don't get me wrong, this isn't their "St. Anger", it's just that if I had to choose my favourist Chevelle album, this wouldn't be it. They set the bar high, they've only got themselves to blame :)

If you're just discovering Chevelle, I'd recommend starting out with Sci Fi Crimes or Wonder What's Next, but in all honesty, you can't buy a bad Chevelle album. It's a crime these guys don't get any airplay in the UK.

Great album, great band.

Chevelle is one of the few bands of real Hard Rock, or Metal if you prefer, who consistently deliver heart pounding tunes. Since criticisms that their first album was too repetitive, they kept what was great about it, which was the change of pace of many tunes and added tunes that were engaging all they way. Ever since they have been producing some of the finest lyrics, and rythms around in Hard Rock or Metal some may prefer. It's a shame such a great band are not better known.

This is album has gone one star down in my opinion, but the album is still deserving of a 4 star. There are reviwers saying their sound has been modified but no revolutions, but let me mention Staind for a second. Staind before their latest self-titled album , some of their work were worth some good puking sessions because for some reason great Metal bands just tend to go to MEEELOW or too Pop e.g. Rage Against the Machine who went from revolutioners of Metal/Rap to complete pop rubbish, and Korn went the exact same path. Back to Chevelle, why change something that is good!!??

Get all their albums and your iPod, MP3's, walkman phones or whatever will thank you, trust me!

Chevelle have once again delivered a masterful collection of songs to energise the mind. The album kicks in with the awesome Face To The Floor and then ebbs and flows between power and grace. By the time you get to track 5 "Pinata" you are woken to the glory of this album.

Key Tracks : Face To The Floor, Pinata, Hats Off To The Bull, Prima Donna
