Book Description

11 Oct 2012

For fans of The Bunny Suicides, Simon's Cat and 101 Uses of a Dead Cat comes the hilariously offensive Hate Mail by Mr Bingo.

'Gorgeous and funny! Like a labrador doing stand-up' - Noel Fielding

'A horrible, hilarious little book' - The Times

'Wonderfully offensive... Wonderfully vicious' - The Huffington Post

Mr Bingo loves post. In April 2011 he launched a service on his website, where, for a small payment, he would send his customer a vintage postcard with one of his iconic drawings and an offensive message on the back. So the purchaser gets a much sought-after original signed drawing, the postman gets a laugh and the world gets a little bit happier.

Six days after launch, it had become so popular that he had to temporarily close the service. But fear not! Mr Bingo is teaming up with Penguin to create Hate Mail, a book that will showcase 100 of his favourite comic cards.

Take a peak at some of Mr Bingo's Hate Mail postcards: http://www.mr-bingo.org.uk/

Mr Bingo didn't learn a lot at school but he did discover one valuable thing: he was good at making people laugh. Now an enormously successful illustrator based in Shoreditch, he is "drawing stuff" for the likes of The Mighty Boosh, QI, the Guardian, MTV and The New York Times. As well as making pictures, Mr Bingo regularly speaks at events on his favourite topics, such as religion, the internet, dating, animals, art and terrorism.

5.0 out of 5 stars A heartbreaking work of staggering genius 10 Oct 2012
Format:Hardcover
So much has been written about this book that its reputation alone is enough to dissuade some readers. I think this reflects the balance of opinion about it, both why it is so revered and why some describe it as being crap.

For what it is worth, 'Hate Mail' is, for me, one of the most sublime monuments in world literature, a book unlike any other, and one that deserves a place among the very small number of classics that should be enjoyed for centuries to come.

However, I do understand those that have struggled and failed with it.

Firstly, to like this book is not 'boring'. It is perhaps my boredom that made me buy it and want to understand it to begin with, but certainly not my boredom that made me enjoy it.

Secondly, it is 'not bad'. If someone tells you otherwise, I would like to know what they are comparing it to. Mr Bingo's humour is convoluted and obscure, and often the jokes so oblique that they bypassed me if my attention was wandering. I have read the book twice and realised that I missed much the first time round. However, the rewards for sticking with it are huge.

Thirdly, don't let the scholarly dissection of the book put you off. There are a lot of themes underpinning the book, not least the explicit parallels with 'Readers Wives' and other pornographic magazines, and the slightly more implicit theme of the relationship between man and his loneliness.

However, it would be wrong to view 'Hate Mail' as some sort of puzzle to be solved. It is, very simply, a book about a man, his pen, and his hatred for the human race.

I read a lot, but only a couple of books have I enjoyed more, The Kama Sutra in Braille being one of them. Please make the effort to look at this book. It really is worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Talent, composition and thought... 10 Oct 2012
Format:Hardcover
There is talent, composition and thought involved in Mr Bingo's work. It's well drawn and executed. He's clearly had formal art training. A great book.

Riotously dark and deeply funny, this book is a big fat punch to your comedy brain. More laughs per dollar than any book on the market. Do your soul a favor and buy several - for yourself and you humor-starved friends.

Very funny concept - people paying to be insulted. This book is certainly not for children or those easily offended, but for others of us who like a good insult it is very funny indeed. There are some days when I would willingly hand out for free insults like those beautifully inscribed in this book. Thank you Mr. Bingo for providing a little resistance against the P.C. world that surrounds us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Disgustingly funny and strangely melancholic 10 April 2014
By GT-13
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
A weird combination - old postcards, the cheesy kind with views of holiday locations, and the worst kind of insults. Somehow, it works. This is one of the funniest one-off ideas I've seen, and the fact the people actually paid for it makes it even better. But using the medium of the holiday postcards makes it a lot stranger, and for those of us who remember these when they were in vogue, wistful and even more memorable. A great double-whammy, I can't think of anything else like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A clever idea
Very amusing and an original idea. The vintage postcards added a great deal. Apparently the writer was oversubscribed and had to stop the list.
