Book Description

1 Oct 2009
Five months ago, Valerie Leftman's boyfriend opened fire on their school cafeteria, killing five students and one teacher before turning the gun on himself. Valerie, who was shot trying to stop him, is initially implicated in the shootings because of the hate list she helped create. The hate list her boyfriend used to pick his targets.

As Valerie integrates back into school, more of an outsider than she ever thought she was before, she is forced to confront her feelings of guilt and loneliness. Exploring the gray area between hero and villain, she navigates the rocky relationships with her family, her former friends, with the memory of the boyfriend she still loves, and with the girl whose life she saved five months ago. As she moves toward graduation and the year anniversary of the shooting, Valerie must come to grips with the tragedy that took place and her role in it all in order to make amends and move on with her life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too 8 Oct 2009
By TeensReadToo TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
Valerie is alone. Her family tiptoes around her, her friends act like she doesn't exist, and most of the people in the community think she should be dead.

Valerie's boyfriend, the person she trusted more than anyone else, shattered her life when he brought a gun to school and wounded several students and killed many others, including himself. Most people believe Valerie was involved, but she had no idea what Nick was planning.

After spending weeks in the hospital recovering from a near-fatal gunshot wound to the leg, Valerie is moved to the psychiatric ward for observation. Afterwards, during her many therapy sessions, she begins to think back on her relationship with Nick and all the events that led up to the terrible act that changed an entire community.

HATE LIST is an extremely powerful story. I was in tears for the last eighty pages and felt emotionally drained by the time I reached the last page. Jennifer Brown has given us a wonderful example of the importance of keeping a watchful eye out for bullying in our schools.

Valerie is a strong character and it was great to witness her healing process. Once I started HATE LIST I couldn't stop. I read every chance I could. Even though the subject matter is very serious, this book was a pleasure to read.

Thank you, Ms. Brown.

5.0 out of 5 stars Weirdly Beautiful! 23 Mar 2012
Format:Paperback
Valerie is coping with life after the aftermath of a shooting at her school - by her boyfriend, Nick. Now she believes (not completely incorrectly) that everyone blames her for it, despite stopping the shooting and gaining a bullet to her leg in the process. Going back to the past to show us what happened and switching to the future to show us the aftermath, this book kept me reading until the very last page.

Although Valerie was the main character, her boyfriend Nick was the most memorable for me. He seemed to have a presence during every chapter of the book, regardless of whether or not he was in that chapter or not! Valerie is a character I won't forget easily, I felt torn in two reading her story, agreeing with Valerie's opinions of herself and her parent's opinions at the same time. I wish I could have known her brother better, as he seemed pretty awesome and I was curious to see how having a sister that's accused of being an accomplice to a murderer effected him. I really hated Valerie's dad. I wanted to understand him but the stuff he said/did just made me hate more and more.

I got everything I expected from this book - and more. For such a thick book, it was a surprisingly quick read - probably because I enjoyed it so much! I loved watching (reading?) Valerie slowly come out of her shell throughout the book, making new friends and discovering herself again. I thought that the last chapter was just beautiful, and a very fitting ending to Valerie's story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved The hate list. 8 Jan 2012

This book has everything a good book needs.
I really liked Valerie. She's a normal teenager. She's not part of the cool scene at school and the popular kids sorta pick on her. So she starts a hate list.
She writes down the names of the people and things that she 'hates'.
Not just the kids that bully her, also her parents who fight all the time and teachers who are lame.
In comes Nick, her boyfriend. He's a normal teenager too, he gets picked on too.
And he's in on the hate list. Yet he is pushed past his last limit and takes it to extremes.
He decides to take revenge on those on the list.
When a whoopie cushion just won't do... He decides to shoot them.
The amazing thing about this book is: Eventhough what Nick does is absolutely terrible... I liked him.
I found myself thinking that some of these kids got what they deserved.
Of course, no one deserve such a faith.
But Nick is not a bad guy, and there's where the authors talent comes out.
It isn't easy to make an audience actually like the bad guy in the book.
Because that's basically what Nick's supposed to be.

The book mostly revolves around Valerie returning to her highschool.
And how the other students and even the teachers treat her.
Some blame her, some celebrate her. (not the shooting, but the fact that she stopped it)
One of my favorite things about the book was her family dynamic before and after the shooting.
Seemingly normal family, but truly and deeply messed up.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Hate List 15 Dec 2009
Format:Hardcover
I found this a very powerful read. It was such a raw and honest account that it was heartbreaking to read at times. I connected to Val immediately and found it interesting to have the story told from her point of view - having her be the girlfriend of the shooter gave the story a unique feel. I found it very insightful watching her grapple with her feelings towards the Nick she remembered and the reality of what he had done.

Jennifer Brown has a lovely writing style - it's very accessible and I found myself flying through the book. She uses flashbacks and newspaper articles to bring the past to light and this works superbly - by the time you get to the shooting you really feel for all the characters which makes it even more devastating. I liked that you got to see Nick from Val's point of view to show that a real person was behind the shooting - even if that makes it even more horrifying and heartbreaking.

I found Val's journey to be a rollercoaster ride of emotion - the book is very character driven and focuses on Val's need to overcome/accept what has happened and forgive her role in it so she can move on with her life. She is a brilliantly crafted character - a kind of warts and all approach. I found this extended to the other characters as well - I found their reactions to be realistic - the hate, anger, fear, the need to blame or hold someone accountable and ultimately forgiveness. I think it was her father's reaction that was the most devastating. It felt realistic though, even if I did spend most of the book wishing he'd be different.

This is definitely a book that will stay with me. Val felt very real to me and I'd love to see how she's getting on in the future.
