Skinny! 22 Sep 2009
By Simon Hall TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
"Blazemaster likes to swoop over his enemies and drop his payload on their heads", runs his bio. I'm not sure what sort of payload a News Helicopter would have, but still...

That aside, this is beautifully sleek helicopter. Probably the best since Universe Blades and his Cybertron equal. It's only really let down by the white rotors, which make it look like what it is: a toy.

Like Mixmaster, Blazemaster is a bit of a task to transform and can be tricky to negotiate on the first go. He also suffers from a slight design oversight: he doesn't `clip' together, his various body parts just hang loose and a bit of creativity is required to get him to stay together (I opted for a slight mis-transformation).

The robot mode is a spindly, awkward creature and prone to falling over. As previously seen on other ball jointed toys, the hips just can't support the weight of the upper body. This can be overcome by turning the upper thighs inside out. His stability isn't helped by including a little too much articulation in his lower legs which also causes balance issues. There's not much in the way of proper arms, comprised as they are from the fuselage. He has two thumbs, but without any fingers he can't do a right lot with those except hitch a lift. The helicopter blades split in two and double as arm mounted blade weapons, but they don't fit very well on his right arm and tend to dangle down on the axle on the left arm.

Being a fan of the Arcee `bots, I like his unconventional robot mode. Its just a pity about his lack of stability and, of course, steep retail price, but at least he doesn't suffer from Gold Plastic Syndrome.

Not so great. 28 Aug 2009

Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
As a big fan of flying Autobots, when I saw that there was a new helicopter, I had to get it. Don't get me wrong, Blaze Master looks nice enough in both modes, but his flimsy contruction and convoluted transformation make him more frustrating than anything else.

First, the instructions on this one have to be the worst I've ever seen. At one point, the directions look like they want you to bend a portion of the cockpit that does not even have a joint.

Second, he falls apart easily when transforming because the different pieces tend to get in the way of each other as you try to move and position them. It is especially difficult to get his arms back to their helicopter position without them popping off.

Third, the blades do not stay on the arms well. The one on the rotar attachment swings downward and points toward the floor. The other one can manage to stay straight, but falls off pretty easily.

Fourth. The legs are flimsy and (on mine) somewhat loose, so posing him (or just getting him to stand straight) in robot mode is a challenge.

For the collector that will just have him on the shelf, or the adult who thinks he's too cool not to get, I'd recommend for appearances only. For anyone looking for a Transformer to play with (especially kids), I would recommend looking elsewhere.

My son loves transformers and we've been collecting them for nearly 2 years now. I save the cardboard back to the package and all the directions. I keep them in a binder for those days when we're having problems transforming them. I have them all saved.... except for this one. If you have one I would love to get a photocopy of it if that's possible. Thank you!!
