Dungeons and Dragons is a famous roleplaying game, which is a lot of fun. The drawback is that the hardback rulebooks are expensive and complicated. For a beginner it can seem daunting to invest so much money in something that may prove impossible to learn.
But help is at hand! The Dungeons and Dragons Boardgame appears to be there for the aspiring D&D enthusiast. It is a simplified version of a more complex system, encompassing the main elements of the real game.
One player adopts title of "Dungeon Master", controlling the Monsters and Traps within the Dungeon, while any other players take control of the four characters provided. There are miniatures and boards to demonstrate the action, as well as cards which illustrate items. The Dungeon Master's Manual has pre-set Adventures which can be played out in sequential order, and ample rules. To seasoned D&D veterans, the action may seem diluted and bare of roleplaying, but if it enthuses players then I see no harm in it. Perhaps a good introduction for children, although it takes some intelligence to comprehend the rules.
As a side note, I actually bought this game just to take advantage of the well-modelled plastic miniatures that accompany it. There are four Player Characters, and a horde of monsters including undead, goblins and bugbears.

I first played this game before i knew of the huge world of dungeons and dragons, and so i thought that it was incredible, this is the best (simple) board game which you can learn to play in ten minutes with family or friends and you can also make this last as long as you like.
But when i found out the larger world of d&d this game became a bit simple, you couldnt create your own player and the amount of monsters is fairly limited, but now that i have moved on from this game and have recently bought 4th edition of d&d im sure that the boards and the miniatures will become amazingly helpful.
Overall i would say if your a beginner or have never played d&d before then this is definitly 5/5 an is a great start to a d&d career, but if you are an experienced player or are looking for a complecated game then this is not the game for you although the miniatures are great and it comes with loads of tiles to create your own dungeon, if you are a fan of d&d go for something like 4th edition or 3.5 editions because this are more compleacted but are more fun in the long term

Never having played the RPG (original) version of D@D I can't compare the two...
However, the boardgame is otherwise a fun game to play with kids (I've been playing with mine since the game first came out, so they must have begun aged 8 and 11).
Like most boardgames, it does tend to degenerate into a die-rolling contest, but there is lots of scope for creating your own adventures and adding house-rules to make it more fun and more realistic.
Do that, add a lot more in the way of imagination to the creation of your home-made scenarios, and you've got a fun board game.
However, the boardgame is otherwise a fun game to play with kids (I've been playing with mine since the game first came out, so they must have begun aged 8 and 11).

I love this game. It is so much fun. It makes you feel like you are actually a real life hero. A great version of dungeons and dragons. BUY THIS GAME!
