My lad has had a few digital cameras including an early fisher price which was great apart from the most important thing and that was the quality of picture it took, I purchased a normal digital camera in the end but its not as much fun as the kiddie ones, I was hoping the Playskool was not going to let us down on the quality of the picture.

First impression are very good, a nice big easy to hold camera with lots of fun features, The projection feature is really good fun and you can customize pictures with sound effects and funny faces.

The biggest let down like the early Fisher camera is the extremely low resolution of the camera.
You have to snap photos up close and be in VERY bright lighting, ideally always out side in the bright sunlight in order to see what you've taken a picture of.
The camera doesn't work in low lighting and in some outside lighting. What a let down! you can buy a camera for half this price with a quality image, I did wonder if would be any good as there is no mention of the pixels or resolution any where on the product info.

A really good fun camera that is badly let down by the one thing it should be able to do and that take a descent picture, It's probably okay as a first play camera but it does seem a bit on the expensive side just to be a play thing

I bought this for my 3 year old and wanted it to look like mine, so I bought the grey one. It seems that all 'boy' effects come on first on this one... My daughter was initially unimpressed! She loved the effects, when we found more girly and funny ones, and especially enjoys using the projector mode. And after two days, the batteries are still going strong. It requires 4 batteries at a time, which are screwed in place (so a nuisance if you need to replace regularly).

I couldn't decide on this or the Kidizoom. This on was £10 cheaper and being Playskool I thought was probably indestructible. Perfect for a 3 year old. SO far it has been dropped numerous times and functions perfectly.

Personally I found the quality of pictures much worse than expected, I think it is in the region of 0.3 Mega Pixels (photos register on computer as 640 x 480 and 96 dpi). However, the 3 year old thinks that the photos are fabulous. The projected image is very grainy. I don't think a 7 year old would find it particularly good, but it is perfect for a 3 year old with low expectations. It does not come with a USB cable, but we had a couple around the house from other cameras that fit, so transferring photos was a breeze. The overlay effects do transfer if on pictures but not the animated ones.

I would recommend it for a 3-4 year old but 5+ would go for the Kidizoom.

Introducing children to photography is a good thing, and this Playskool 'Showcam' tries to aid this introduction. The alternative to these cameras, which are specifically aimed at children offer much more robust alternative to entry level digital compacts which wouldn't last 10 minutes in the hands of a young child. Firstly, this camera is quite big so a younger child, with small hands may not be able to operate this camera. However, with our 2 year-old this wasn't an issue. The buttons are nice and big, and tactile. It seems reasonably durable, although the chassis of the camera seems to be made of a strong plastic (it does have two rubber grips to the side) and may shatter if the child is determined enough to damage it (although nothing seems to be able to resist this intent!!). These are this cameras best qualities. In terms of performance, the camera is awful. In low light you can see next to nothing. Even in good light conditions (outside) the camera delivers a really poor performance. Some of the menus offer the opportunity to add effects to the image - these are good but because you can't really see the image, the effect is lost to a large degree.

Of course, this is a child's camera but to really give the child a 'buzz' you want them to be able to see the results. And of course, you need to expect some loss of performance. However, we know that we can buy a digital camera for the same price as this that provides photographs you can see - I don't believe it should be lacking on this camera - no matter who is meant to be using it. As an aside, the 'showcam' which allows you to project images onto walls is a lovely idea - but once again, fails because images aren't sharp enough to really be seen.

I have experience with this type of kid's camera as we already have a Vtech Kidizoom Twist Digital Camera 122853 (Pink). This camera is certainly larger than the kidizoom and seems easier to handle. It will be more appropriate for smaller children (ages 2+). I agree with other customers that the resolution is poor, but this is common for toy cameras (in fact, I could not find what the resolution is written anywhere). The camera seems durable and has the usual features (effects and frames for photos etc). The projector function is funny, but difficult to display properly. Power consumption appears fair (no worse than other cameras of this type), but make sure to get rechargeable batteries. All in all I think this is a good product, looks like daddy's camera (if you happen to own an SLR) and will make your little one happy for a while. It is a bit bulky yes, but things too delicate do not survive long in these age groups.

Update: after a bit of use i decided to lower the star rating for the following reasons:

I have not been able to locate the camera resolution info
The screen is terrible at low light
There are no games
You cannot take video
You can not record audio
There is no memory card
Cable is needed to extract pics and not supplied
Its a bit too bulky for my 4 year old to hold and press the shutter button.

On the plus side, the projector is a lot more fun than i figured.

All in all i prefer the kidizoom option.
