Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Trivial Pursuit has just moved into the 21st century with the Genus Edition. Ever felt disadvantaged at Trivial Pursuit simply because the questions related to a time just before you were born--to 50s films and politicians? If so the bang up-to-date Genus Edition is what you've been waiting for. "Which Tory boy inspiration did Harry Enfield say has, 'a revolting greasy head of hair, disgusting pudgy nose and no discernible chin'? (Michael Portillo)"

The rules and objectives of the Trivial Pursuit Genus Edition are basically the same as for the original Trivial Pursuit we all loved nearly 20 years ago. It is still the ultimate adult party game to test and show off your general knowledge. The categories of questions are the same: Geography, Entertainment, History, Arts & Literature,. Science & Nature and Sport & Leisure. Yet the questions in each category are much more current than their predecessors. "What is the colour of the bottom of the Macintosh apple?" (Blue)

At times this more current context may give an impression of dumbing down Trivial Pursuit but in reality it is simply that the questions are more relevant to today's generation. "Which magazine was first produced in the room where Willie Rushton was born?" (Private Eye)

The game includes a game board, 400 question and answer cards, two cardholders, one dice, six scoring tokens and 36 coloured wedges.

For two to six players or teams. The Trivial Pursuit Genus Edition is the classic party game to be enjoyed with friends and family.--Victoria Mackenzie

2.0 out of 5 stars Alas, the pie turns rotten, 10 April 2003
By Joyce Knox (Glasgow, Scotland) - See all my reviews
Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars Educational:3.0 out of 5 stars
Getting tired of my old Genus 2nd edition game with it's questions on the USSR and East and West Berlin, I decided to buy a new game since replacement question seem no longer available.

What a dissappointment; Firstly; the original Genus had 6000 questions, this new edition has 2400, less than half. I like other reviewers found many questions being repeated after only a few games. To a large extent the lure of the original was it's abundance of questions, which kept you playing well into the night. If you play by the official rules of only receiving a pie wedge on a pie square, you'll have used up all these questions after a few games.

Secondly, the sturdy question boxes have been replaced by stupid little plastic containers. Why?? Is this supposed to make up for the lack of questions? If it is they fail spectacularly, note to Hasbro: People play this game to excercise their mind, plastic card holders aren't exactly going to make it any more enjoyable. Now, half the questions are held in these plastic containers, the other half are left to rattle around freely in the box. Who at Hasbro actually thought this was practical design? Did this game go through any sort of quality standards test?

Thirdly, the roll again squares have been replaced with shortcut squares, a sneaky way of getting the game over more quickly since they're are now so few questions it's possible to notice repeat questions in a single game.

I actually don't have much of a problem with the questions themselves, I'd still rather answer questions on Tony Blair or post appartheid South africa than questions on the boundaries of West Berlin. Also, if you have played any previous Genus edition, you'll know Trivial Pursuit began updating itself since the second edition, and there are still questions on Churchill etc. But NEVER did they cut down so drastically on the questions.

Now I'm not much interested in playing my old version due to it's out of date questions, or this edition due to the repition of questions which creeps in after a few games. The board looks a lot snazzier with pictures from across history, but again nothing can make up for the lack of questions.

My advice? Keep your money and wait for a better version in the future.

2.0 out of 5 stars A Poor Update, 27 Dec 2001
By Graham Maden (Kent - UK) - See all my reviews
Durability:1.0 out of 5 stars Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars Educational:2.0 out of 5 stars
After playing the original since college days it was becoming obvious that it was outdated and had a distinct gap - namely about the last 16 years! So I was faced with buying the whole game again as the separate cards seem to have recently become unobtainable (what a shame).

After the first two games I became more than disappointed. The degree of repetition in the cards has now (after a few more games) made it unplayable. I find the instances where we are pulling out the next card, as we recall the question from last time, very frustrating. At first I suspected that this was due to recycling them wrongly - but carefully checked this over the next few games and it is not so - questions appear a number of times on the current card set.

As others have reported here - there are also mistakes which I never detected with groups of friends playing the original over many years. This makes you loose confidence on the accuracy of any of the answers that you don't know - a real problem.

A real disappointment - think carefully before you buy.

2.0 out of 5 stars Inferior upgrade, 18 Dec 2001
Durability:3.0 out of 5 stars Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars Educational:2.0 out of 5 stars
Having played my original version to death I decided to purchase a new set of cards. Unfortunately you can no longer get these so I bit the bullet and bought a whole new game.

How disappointing. There are a fraction of the number questions compared to the original game and the rules are different. No longer can you 'throw again' instead you have a 'short cut' to a wedge question. I preferred the old format.

The questions are embarrassingly poor. Some are clearly wrong due to mis-prints (Nelsons Column wasn't a continent the last time I looked). Others are just incorrect (I'd stake money on Alexander Fleming being the inventor penicillin).

This new version is frustrating not fun. You can't rely on the accuracy of the answers so this would not be good for a family. Younger players may become confused. The repetitive nature of the questions also means anyone who has played this version already has an advantage.

This is an extremely poor relation to the original blockbuster
