I bought this for my 5-year old niece as her older brother had played the original around that age, of course I had a go on it first! Firstly, the choice of I think 6 different sets of cards extends the fun of the game; the red/green buttons are used as yes/no answers, making silly noises appropriately - they add a little interest but it doesn't seem as if they are necessary for the game, so if they should break, its no big deal. I have to say that this particular 5-year old struggled with asking questions when we were using any set but the original, as the new characters required different strategies like knowing which animals live in water, which appliances go where in the house etc etc - but this would be a good opportunity for older kids or adults to encourage a younger child to think about it...
If I had to criticise the game, I would say the setup instructions are not very good, the sliders that let you choose the character you want to be are always falling out but can be easily pushed back in, and its not intuitive how to open and unfold the game if you don't know the trick! But overall, I think the price is right and its a good update of the original.
