Product Description

Product Description

This guide was commissioned by the Institution of Civil Engineers and the Building Research Establishment to provide practical guidance for homeowners whose properties have been affected by subsidence, or heave, or who are concerned by the potential risk of damage. The first, best-selling, edition dealt specifically with the problems associated with properties founded on shrinkable clay soils, and was reprinted many times. The second edition has been expanded to include sections on other types of subsidence and causes of damage that are unrelated to foundation movement. It also looks at the potential problems that can arise when buying or selling a property that has previously been affected by subsidence.

This book does exactly what it says ! It is a clear yet concise guide to recognising the cause(s) of house cracks, how to assess whether they are serious or just cosmetic, what to do about the cracks and how to approach and what to expect from your insurance company.

It's rare to find a book dealing with such a subject that is neither superficial nor extremely theoretical. It is well focussed and includes a wealth of good information.

Highly recommended if you have cracks in your house and you want to understand what to do about them.

Very Good Information 21 Aug 2006
By Ben G - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is a very good book for home owners whose house foundations have cracked, or who are worried about the possibility of cracking. The information is laid out logically and in a conversational style that is easy to read and not overly boring. The one drawback for American readers is that the book is written by British authors and is therefore very UK-specific at times (e.g., when discussing common foundation types, applicable laws, information on insurance claims, etc.). Still, for demystifying the causes of foundation problems, I have not seen a better resource.
good book for someone not professional 4 Nov 2006
By Nikolaos Derekas - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
its a good book for someone how is not a pro.

For proffesionals its medium.

Bad think is that as many simiral books is talking only for house design in UK wich is much simpler than in other countries with higher seismicity (Greece etc).
