Harvester is an album of ten covers, of songs performed or originally performed by artists that were signed to Harvest Records, now interpreted and performed by The Blue Aeroplanes: an art-rock group from Bristol who formed in the late 80's to bring folk, rock, pop, poe try and art to the masses. The band has always centred around Gerard Langley and his poetry, with more than 80 members adding their bit to the Blue Aeroplanes sound since they released their first album in 1984 (including Angelo Brushini, now in Massive Attack).
Langley's writing style has earned the band comparisons to the Velvet Underground and Time Out called them "the best band to emerge from the west country," in their review of Altitude in April 2006.
They had two top 75 singles in the early 90's: Jacket Hangs and ...And Stones but were big favourites independent and student radio across the nation

Format:Audio CD
A surprise release from the Aeroplanes, and not one which flies as high as their greatest offerings, check out the classic Swagger and Beatsongs for their best offerings. This reminds me more of their Fire Records recordings, which although great live, did not work so well on vinyl.
Stagger Lee is however fantastic, but then it's a fantastic song, and not as explicit as the Murder Ballads version (but then could anything be!).
One for the fans, but extremely unlikely to attract a new following.

Format:Audio CD
There are two reasons I didn't give this much of a chance when it first came out:-
1) Covers albums seem a little pointless when you only know one of the originals; and
2) The one song I did know - I'm Stranded by The Saints - is such a favorite that the slightly throwaway cover here was a bit of a disappointment,
but for some reason I picked it up again and since then it has barely been off the stereo (and there haven't been too many of those this year). Altitude was a bit hit and miss last year (if only they had taken the time to re-record it with the fantastic line-up which subsequently toured it, then it might have been different) so to me this is the first time the revitalised Aeroplanes have really hit their stride..and it is not that far behind Beatsongs or Swagger - honestly.
Anyway, its now time for me to track down the original versions and do the covers album thing in reverse!

Format:Audio CD
Although Harvest does not have the variety and intelligence of their early work (a post-punk-Velvet Underground take on folk, psychedelic, jazz and funk), it is still one of their most engaging recordings in recent years.
