The greatest story of transition in pop/rock history. The Move were still pushing out classic singles on Harvest, maintaining their near-permanent residency on Top Of The Pops each week, while in the studio they were concentrating on their next incarnation: The Electric Light Orchestra.
Then, no sooner had they hit the charts with the awesome '10538' and debut album as ELO, Wood left to form Wizzard and a friendly Brummy duel of the bands began. Amazingly Wood kept his solo output going while all this was happening. Lynne continued the dream with ELO, filling stadiums around the world and dominating the 1970s with classic albums and singles.
This compilation is not only good for a newcomer to grab a sample of those incredible years 1971-3, but also a chance for the die-hard fans to hear interesting rare versions of some familiar tracks.
The omission of 'California Man' (the final 'Move' single) and 'Roll Over Beethoven' (ELO's follow-up to '10538' and first single without Wood) is only just forgivable as they are now available on re-issues of 'Message From The Country' (Move) and ELO 2. Had they been included here, I would've awarded 5 stars.
This just about ties up some of the loose ends of the story of when Wood and Lynne ruled British pop, though I'm hoping it will also serve as a prompt for Harvest to remaster, repackage and re-release 'Boulders' (Wood's 1st solo album) and 'Wizzard Brew' (a magnificently weird debut album from a band known mostly for their singles).
For the uninitiated I'd advise start with this and then check out 'Message From The Country' and the first ELO album (Anniversary Edition). For the completist (like me), this is an essential cd to own.

Excellent Sound,Good Music,but for trivia enthusiasts & Trainspotters 1 Oct. 2005
By Philip A.Cohen - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
I remember once reading a review of the vinyl-only U.S.A. "Beatles Rarities" many years ago,in which it was described as "Not so much rarities as footnotes",and that description also applies to this collection of 1970-73 tracks by Electric Light Orchestra,Roy Wood,Wizzard & The Move. You get edited single versions("Tonight","Mr.Radio","Do Ya") mono mixes made for radio("10538 Overture",unedited, and probably just summed down from the stereo album mix),B-sides("The Carlsburg Special","Music to Commit Suicide to",neither of which are particularly rare, since they're available on other CD's),a slightly different unreleased mix of "Showdown",unreleased instrumental backing tracks("Roll Over Beethoven" as hidden bonus track and "King Henry's B*ll*cks" A.K.A. "In Old England Town(instrumental version)") and several common album & single tracks, albeit now with studio chat and/or countoffs at the start("Forever","Ball Park Incident","Dear Elaine" & "Until Your Momma's Gone").But the main feature in this collection is the excellent remastered sound from newly discovered first generation master tapes.but, overall,it's a good introduction to the music of these artists, and if you're a hard core fan & completist, then you'll want it.
