By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
When a young Duke seeks to overthrow a vicious king for the good of the land, he is faced with performing atrocities of his own in obtaining his goal. The young daughter of the slain king is publically raped to seal the union of the Duke to the land; afterwards, he extends "mercy" to her and allows her to live. This act leads to three centuries of strife and despair, in which it is discovered that beauty is indeed only skin-deep, and that heroism is not limited by age, sex, or physical abilities.

This is a story of love, betrayal, courage, and of the extent to which one will go to seek revenge. It also examines the question of whether the ends can ever justify the means.

Mr. Card's characters are finely-drawn as always.

This was a thought provoking novel, from one of my favourite authors. I enjoyed it, but would point out that it deals with some rather dark themes. Many of Card's novels (for example the Ender series) are suited to and enjoyed by young-adult readers. Some parents may not consider this novel suitable for their kids. If it was a movie it would definitely rate an 18 certificate.

Fantastic Fantasy 8 Jan 2010
Format:Paperback
This brilliant book has instantly leapt into my top ten! The story is excellent, characters compelling, and the way the story is unfolded for us interesting.

As with the best fantasies a much larger world is suggested than we actually see, making it so much realer to the reader.

This is not a sword and sorcery epic and no buckles are swashed. Expect an intelligent, introspective fantasy which is more tragedy than adventure.
