These notes are useful as they really focus on the symbolism of the novel. In the textual notes the reader's attention is continually drawn to aspects of the language and imagery that might be missed by all but a very observant reader. Handley is extremely thorough in his approach to the text (with a useful 'Further Reading' section - as good criticism is hard to find) and the result is that his notes are a vital companion to a close reading of the novel.
