Review

'A first-rate historian, now a masterly story-teller' (Bernard Cornwell on ZULU HART )

'David is a popular historian with a rare talent . . . An unashamed crowd-pleaser with a compelling, sexy hero who could give Cornwell's Sharpe a run for his money.' (The Times on ZULU HART )

'A Victorian adventure as big as the veldt and chewier than buffalo biltong . . . real figures of the period are endowed with motive, intent and dialogue that may be fictitious but are entirely convincing' (Sunday Telegraph on ZULU HART )

'Let's hope that Saul David's new character will be reappearing . . . a terrific adventure' (Rodney Troubridge on ZULU HART )

'Gems like this are too rare. I was hooked in ten pages.' (Conn Iggulden on ZULU HART )

Product Description

Back in England following his heroics in the Zulu Wars, George Hart is summoned to a new adventure when Prime Minister Disraeli asks him to go on a secret mission to Afghanistan, where the British fear Muslim extremists are poised to overthrow the local ruler and threaten the jewel in the Imperial crown, India.

Hart has severe misgivings. Always an outsider in British society, he doesn't like Whitehall's arrogant way of meddling in other people's religious and political affairs, but desperate for money, he takes the job and descends the Khyber Pass into a strange and violent land.

When his warnings are ignored by the pompous British Resident in Kabul, a terrible massacre occurs and soon Hart is on the run with a beautiful Afghan princess, in a race to prevent an uprising and head off a catastrophic British invasion.

Hart of Empire is good old fashioned story telling, mixed with historical accuracy and resonance. Hart of Empire has a Flashman-esque plot and setting (albeit George Hart is slightly braver than the classic anti-hero) and there are echoes of early Wilbur Smith, but increasingly Saul David is finding his own voice and style within the genre. By setting book in Afghanistan the author is able to deftly touch upon argument that we are seeing History repeating itself there - in regards to untrustworthy warlords, equally untrustworthy politicians, ill formed intelligence and martial bravery - but ultimately one should read Hart of Empire for what it is, an enjoyable and engaging potboiler. Looking forward to next book in series.

Having missed the original fictional outing of George Hart (Zulu Hart) by renowned historian Saul David, I wasn't entirely sure what to expect.

Whilst I knew it was historical fiction it is set in a time I really don't know that much about historically so I knew that I was going in on the wrong foot but strangely excited to see what occurred.

What makes this story different is the author's closeness to historical fact and whilst the odd little fact is twisted to fit the tale, the majority of it has the plausibility to have a ring of truth about it that will enchant many a reader.

The characters are fantastic, the tale building and weaving beautifully and with some seriously good dialogue as well as characters to meet within (some real some fictional) made this title very hard to put down. I'm definitely going to have to get my hands on the first book sooner rather than later to have a visit to Roukes Drift and review the carnage at "first hand."

I really enjoyed the first book in this series, Zulu Hart. Hart of Empire is even better. The central character, George Hart, is a young, 19 year old soldier. Having proved himself in South Africa, Hart is sent on a special mission to Afghanistan and we feel like we're on the journey with him.
Book and hero are akin to a Bernard Cornwell Sharpe novel- but the backdrop and the Great Game, public-school-hero flavour to book reminds the reader of a Flashman adventure.
Although Saul David is not quite in the league of Cornwell or Macdonald Fraser yet (but who is?) Hart of Empire is thoroughly enjoyable and engaging.

Hart of Empire
Have started reading this book and it is just as good and Zulu Hart. I like the historical facts woven into these stories. So much history is being repeated to-day!
