What can I say about the book... wow. I pre-ordered a copy after seeing the promotional youtube video and was thrilled to receive my copy today (quite a bit earlier than expected, thanks amazon). I was instantly overwhelmed by the size of it - it is incredibly heavy and visually stunning. The hardback cover is sturdy with beautiful presentation and a lovely picture of Hogwarts on the front. There is no tacky blurb or explanation of the book on the back cover either which is refreshing. The sheer volume of information and pictures inside the book make it worth the money as there are behind the scenes photographs, cast interviews, beautiful artistic impressions and photographs of many details you may have missed while watching the movies. My favourites include the fold-out intricate drawings of the Death Eater masks and the wonderfully detailed plan of Hogwarts.
The contents are as follows:
'Part I: The Making of Harry Potter' contains sections for each movie including introductions, photographs, descriptions, sketches and how each director/screenwriter etc faced challenges in adapting the book and how they accomplished it. There is a breakdown of important sequences from the movie so you can learn how they created The Battle of Hogwarts, Illuminating the Inferi etc. My only complaint in that the first book/movie is listed as 'Harry Potter and The Sorcerers Stone' which annoyed me a little as I'm British and remain loyal to the Philosophers Stone (of course).
'Part II: The Art of Harry Potter' covers each character/costumes, locations/set design, creatures/special makeup and digital effects and artifacts/prop making. The concept art is breathtaking and I was thoroughly interested in how they brought all the magical creatures to life on the big screen. There are sections in the book for everything you can imagine - The Sorting Hat, how they made a Howler, the creation of Fawkes, Dragons, Dementors... the amount of detail is overwhelming.
'Part III: Epilogue' - Very short section with acknowledgements and pictures of the cast from the last day on set.
I was surprised by the amount of care that has gone into creating this book as it is wonderful. The detail is breathtaking and I can't think of a single thing they've missed. This is the perfect gift for a Harry Potter fan... unless you don't want to ruin the magic of course.
