Format:Audio CD
There is a lot of Harry Potter on the market, and it's been there now for a long time. Right now, people are eagerly awaiting the last film sequel and then, well, the pack might be moving on to something new.
However, this is definitely a must-have product. Stephen Fry's reading is really outstanding, the characters are alive and it's never ever tiring to listen. And I am talking about 124 CDs here! It's better than any Potter movie, because the reading of the story along with what's going on in one's head is simply great. So come on, sell your books, create shelf space and order it NOW.
By the way: since I'm German, I definitely encourage non-native speakers also to listen to this rather than to the crappy German audiobook version.

This purchase has turned out to be a priceless investment. Since the Potter series drew to a close, many of us have relied on the movies to rekindle the excitement of the Potter adventure; however the films obviously fall quite short.
If, like me, you first picked up the Philosophers Stone over a decade ago and read the whole collection by July 2007 (Deathly Hallows in a bit of a hurry, no doubt) then this is the set for you. With the conclusive evidence of Book VII, the whole set deserves re-reading (or listening), and you will be pleasantly reminded of Rowling's continuity of plot even from Book One, the excitement of each Hogwarts year and the excellent storytelling therein.
Complete and unabridged, there are 103 CDs (divided into the 7 books) each approximately 75minutes long, with about 70 tracks on each - making it easy to find your place should you take a break. There is also one short bonus CD which includes an interview between Rowling and Fry. As a commuter, this box set has re-energised my journey to and from work. I was initially reluctant to splash £195, but have not looked back since I listened to the first chapter of Philosopher's stone again. Having the story read to you particularly helps to pick up on details which you may have missed: very satisfying.
Lastly, I've never been a huge Stephen Fry fan, but he reads this perfectly. It is easy to forget the story is being read at all, as he uses a range of voices and brings the story to life captivatingly yet effortlessly. My one criticism would be that he tends to make most characters sound quite posh, however you can still differentiate the well-spoken Mad-Eye Moody from the well-spoken Ludo Bagman. Few audiobook narrators have such skill.
New to the books, or refreshing your memory, I would recommend this set to anyone with regular access to a CD player.

Format:Audio CD
Having enjoyed quite a lot of audiobooks over the years, I have yet to enjoy a narrative even remotely as good as this one. I find it so good, in fact, that I have replayed the whole box several times. And even at this point, I still occasionally treat myself to one of the books. Though I am a great fan of the Harry Potter books, it is no longer for the story itself, but rather for the enjoyment of Stephen Frys unparalleled narrative. Of all the audiobooks I've ever listened to these are by far the best narrated. First rate producing makes the narrative so consistent, that I have noticed no slips at all throughout the 103 cd's. And Stephen Frys performance and sheer presence makes you keen for more every time a cd ends. As with any story or joke, good or bad, it's all in the delivery. And Stephen Fry does such a great job, that I suspect his narrative could make even an EU directive on road sign harmonization sound interesting.
Considering the unsurpassed overall quality of this box set, and the sheer number of hours of entertainment it holds, I consider it extremely good value indeed.
