Not all new stuff... 27 Mar 2009
Format:Hardcover
Firstly, I am a huge fan of Brian Lumley's Necroscope saga and, unlike some of the reviewers here, I have found his writing to be consistently strong (even The Touch). However, I was disappointed to find that three of the six stories presented here have been published before. Dinosaur Dreams, Dead Eddy and Resurrection appeared in Necroscope and Other Weird Heroes. Shame. The other stories are still worth a read but if you are a Necroscope fan then there is every chance you have already read half of this book.

I was introduced to the original Necroscope book in the early nineties and I have read it so many times it is getting embarrasing.

Like an earlier reviewer I bought the four subsequent books and enjoyed them all (with the exception of the fourth 'Deadspeak' which I thought was a bit silly) and then the Vampire World trilogy just blew me away.

Lost years probably scared me most of all and it had a very real feel to it whereas the latter books started to feel like exploiting a theme. I similarly found 'The Touch' to be a waste of paper.

So I was simultaneously excited and wary about a new Necroscope book. When it arrived, any excitement I had quickly waned. Another bunch of short stories - some that have been included in other books, with a typeface so large it is like being shouted at for half an hour. Presumably to disguise the fact there isn't much there.

I used to want to meet Mr Lumley if only to tell him how he turned me on to a whole new genre of reading. Now I want to meet him to see if I can resist the temptation to slap him. Do your fans a favour, less is more. Pick a new hero and a new subject and let sleeping (or dead) hero's lie.

I have to say that this is the first book of short(ish) stories i have read concerning the Necroscope. I have all the previous books and loved them all.

The short stories are very good and up to the usual high standard, after all these years Harrys voice is as clear as ever. "For The Dead Travel Slowly" is the best in my humble opinion and could easily have been developed into a full length novel.

All in all this is a very good addition to the Necroscope library both for new readers and ones who have been there from the beginning.

I would have prefered a better title though!!

Harry and the Rip-Off
I was eagerly awaiting a new title from Brian Lumley following 'The Touch', which I enjoyed but I would say was not up to the usual enthralling standard of the Necroscope series. Read more

disappointing
I really enjoy Lumleys books and am usually first in line to buy his latest book. This seemed to me to be a lazy way of reminding us that he's still out there. Read more
