This has to be one of Harry Enfield's best creations.

Why it has not released on DVD is a complete mystery.
It was originally released and shown on Channel 4.
Had it been the BBC I feel sure it would have been available on DVD long before now.

It is simply a brilliant piece of comedy work.

Harry Enfield was firing on all cylinders when he wrote and performed this.

My favourite part has to be the Will Hay take offs.

The actor playing Will Silly a Will Hay take off played by Peter Goodwright was simply outstanding and it it was a credit to Enfield that he allowed himself to be upstaged so brilliantly.

But then again Enfield's genius, just like Victoria Wood, is that he does not retain all the best lines and allows great actors to perform.

I'm thinking here of Cathy Burke and Paul Whitehouse.

Renée Asherson as Norbert's wife is wonderful.
As Melvyn Bragg interviews her sat next to her Dementia raddle husband she regales Bragg with tales of Norbert's co actors and adds deadpan 'A marvelous lover'. How Bragg could keep a straight face is beyond me.

The tape (for it has never been released on DVD at the time of writing) has wonderful actors with truly brilliant lines.
Con O'Neill as a strangley Cliff Richard like 'Davy Throb' is brilliant when he recalls Norbert's drug fueled escapades on and of the set of 'Keep Your Hair On Dadio'

Even Barbara Windsor, Jack Douglas and Kenneth Cope are wonderful spoofing their 'Carry On Roles' in Greenham Girls!

The story is a joy from start to finish and is very very funny.

Totally recommended.

Every now and then the BBC produces a comedy which is as funny as anything they have ever done, but disappears without a trace while mediocre stuff like The Office is lauded to the hilt. One such programme was the series Hippies with Simon Pegg. A one off example was Norbert Smith- A Life. An hour long South Bank Show special, hosted by Melvyn Bragg, from Norbert's early years in Rebel Without A Tie to his later comedy work such as Carry On Disarming, this is hysterical stuff. Smith is by far Enfield's greatest creation, and should provide him with a far greater legacy than Loads A Money and the like. Clever, well thought out comic genius, this has vanished off the face of the earth. A great shame.

It is a mysetery that this incredible piece of work has received such little praise over the years. It is simply one of the finest works of comedy ever seen on British TV. It is equally disappointing that it has never been released on DVD, so this video is all that remains. Come on Channel 4!! Sort it out!!!

Whilst I agree with the sentiments I should point out it was a Channel 4 Commission. Brilliant performances all round, especially from Harry Enfield of course, great pastiche. Still one of the funniest things I have ever seen on TV.
