Those who already have recordings of the two well-known harpsichord suites from Handel's 1720 set recorded here should still consider buying this superb value disc simply to revel in Maggie Cole's wonderful music making. Those who have not yet warmed to the harpsichord could well be converted by the attractive Bryars work, dedicated to Cole, that explores the instrument's sound world most effectively in a superbly engineered recording. Indeed, the recording quality is of the highest standard throughout - sweet in the treble, rich in the bass, and with just the right amount of acoustic ambience to capture all of the detail without any of the dryness often associated with recordings of this instrument. The two Scarlatti sonatas are nicely delivered and the Arne sonata is particularly welcome. Christopher Hogwood did an excellent, long since unavailable, recording of all eight sonatas in this set back in the seventies, but since then they have been poorly served in recordings. This is a pity because Arne has a distinctive voice - alternately gracious, affable and robust - and these sonatas deserve to be much more widely known. The immediately appealing J.C. Bach sonata, presumably intended for fortepiano, sounds just right on the harpsichord, the second movement having a Scarlattian brilliance. Oh, and the Handel will not disappoint - utterly commanding performances, among the very best available, taken at an unhurried pace so that you can savour every fascinating moment. What a pity Ms. Cole has not made more recordings than she has.

harpsichord 23 Oct 2011

copy by Michael Johnson after harpsichord by Jean Goermans & Pascal Taskin, 1764 & 1783

Non si tratta quindi di un cembalo originale, ma l'esecuzione di Maggie Cole è come sempre di altissimo livello.

As usual, Maggie Cole gives another awe-inspiring performance at the harpsichord. I highly recommend this album!
