Format:Audio CD
The musicians on this CD play beautifully together - The Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields with Iona Brown and the great harp player Marisa Robles. All the works on this disc are played with grace and delicasy and with technical facility. I was familiar with Beethoven's Six Variations on a Swiss Song from the piano version but they are further enhanced by the sound of the harp. The Handel Harp Concerto op 4 No 6 provides an appetising and compelling start to the CD. Karl Pilley's arrangement of a Dittersdorf unfinished harpsichord concerto works really well and is generally pleasing. But what I return to again and again is the concerto by Boieldieu. This is a case of a creative musician finding new possibilities in technical developments from the instrument manufacturer- Erard. Each movement of this concerto is elegant and tuneful with the final Rondeau providing an appropriate conclusion to the work. I hope you enjoy this too.

...this is a most satisfying CD, which I had given to me by a reluctant owner. I can't imagine why, though it's not everyone who enjoys the sound of the harp. The Handel Concerto has also been arranged for organ, but I find it more effective played by the harp.I first bought this on a 10-inch LP in the 60's and have loved it ever since. The rest of the repertoire on this recording is well worth getting to know. I especially enjoyed the Dittersdorf Concerto. Marisa Robles and the Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields are on good form, so go ahead and invest a few pounds in this recording.

I won't say the harp is an overlooked instrument, but there doesn't seem to be many CDs of harp music, so when a good one comes along it's like gold dust. The selection here is i think what makes it. I'm no great judge of technical virtuosity but instead somebody who closes their eyes and lets the music wash over my mind and soul. If you like harp music you'll like this and you can sample each track first too or, if you don't want them all you can purchase each track individually. What a good idea the Internet is!
