The greatest film ever!, 5 Nov 2007
This review is from: Harold & Maude - Paramount Originals (includes Limited Edition reproduction film poster) [DVD] (DVD)
I'll be the first to admit that in some ways this film hasn't aged well. It was filmed in the early seventies and looks every bit it's age. But underneath the rough exterior, there's a fantastic film here - one that's funny, moving, intelligent and downright weird in places. Yes, the story is about a 20-year old man/boy falling in love with a 79-year old woman, but what's so remarkable about this film is that it's done is such a wonderful way. It's not disgusting, or creepy, or sick - it's love, which is never wrong, just sometimes strane. The film is full of fantastic little touches that a less-compentent director might have messed up, but Hal Ashby was a director who understood film and he doesn't put a foot wrong here. The film also has a fantastic soundtrack made up of Cat Stevens songs, and if you're not humming the tune for "If you want to sing out" at the end, then I pity you. Harold and Maude is everything you could possibly hope for in a film - PLEASE buy it!

One in a million, 27 Jan 2010

This is a sensitive, funny, quirky, unpredictable film with a superb soundtrack and some fantastic acting by Bud Cort and Ruth Gordon. Bud Cort, as Harold, is understated but with a wry half smile and look to camera, can make the whole scene. Ruth Gordon, as Maude, is often hilarious (her run in with the motorbike cop is truly memorable). But most of all this film has a strong script and philosophy, life affirming, optimistic and in many ways 'green' for 1971. The Cat Stevens soundtrack seems to be made for the film, especially 'Trouble' as Harold speeds towards oblivion in his converted black 'E' type Jaguar hearse (I said it was quirky). If you have a morbid sense of humour, enjoy using your brain and thinking differently from those around you, you will enjoy Harold and Maude and will look at life afresh. Live every day as though it was your last- Harold had plenty of practice and found a soulmate in Maude.

Humerous, quirky tale of love and companionship. A fantastic heart-warming film. I watched it with my boyfriend who hates rom-coms and old films (i.e anything pre 80's/90's) and he loved this film! Brilliant soundtrack provided by Cat Stevens as well, what more could you want? Well remastered onto DVD. Buy it, love it, share it!
