Synopsis: A glorious mixture of the riotously morbid and joyously life-affirming, Hal Ashby's Harold and Maude was an instant counter-culture favourite on its release in 1971, and whose popularity has spread in the decades since to become simply one of the most beloved cult comedies ever made.

Following the burgeoning relationship between the gloomy, 20-year-old, suicide-staging Harold (Bud Cort), suffocated by his wealthy homestead, and the sprightly octogenarian Maude (Ruth Gordon), whose bohemian wiles and open-arms approach to living enable his first gentle steps towards embracing existence.

With its brilliant script by Colin Higgins, a magnificent, standard-setting soundtrack by Cat Stevens, wonderful performances, and Hal Ashby's stunning directorial control, Harold and Maude combines a jet-black comic edge with romance, philosophy, satire and beauty to form a masterfully funny and moving whole. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present this masterpiece for the first time on Blu-ray in the UK.

"Harold and Maude" is a classic movie that I have been desperate to watch for many years. I love the bluray format, and if there's a classic movie I haven't seen which is only available on DVD, I try my best to wait until it is restored on bluray. The film is amazing. It's about a privileged, attention seeking boy with mother issues and an obsession with death who learns to embrace life after entering into a relationship with Maude, and elderly woman with a lust for life and a healthy disrespect for authority.

You can tell a movie's a classic by how often it's imitated, and watching this movie for the first time, I can see its fingerprints everywhere. The commandant in "Malcolm In The Middle" has to have been influenced by Harold's uncle.

This bluray release from "The Masters Of Cinema Series" is gorgeous. Immaculately restored to look as much like the original film release as possible, and you have option of watching the film in the original mono or remastered stereo. I love the new sleeve cover artwork: it's a more accurate representation of the movie than the still image used for the old DVD releases. The booklet is 37 pages long and packed full of content. It contains excellent interviews with director Hal Ashby and screenwriter Colin Higgins, but the highlight of the book is definitely the interview with Ruth Gordon. Unfortunately, there's no interview with Bud Cort.

I can't believe how cheap this bluray is(Under a tenner!) I would urge you to buy while the price remains low, because sometimes these classic bluray releases only get printed once, and the price can skyrocket when stocks start to dwindle.

Probably the greatest film ever made, and the greatest love story ever told. Now add the greatest soundtrack ever made and you have Harold and Maude. Made in 1971 and now restored to it's glory, Harold & Maude is an absolute must see and if you are going to watch it then make sure it is in this glorious Blu-ray . An absolute joy!!

Harold is a depressed, death-obsessed 20-year-old, who spends his free time attending funerals and pretending to commit suicide in front of his mother.

Harold befriends Maude, a 79-year-old who has a zest for life. She and Harold spend much time together during which she exposes him to the wonders and possibilities of life.

After rejecting his mother's attempts to set him up with a potential wife, and committing fake suicide in front of all of them, Harold announces that he is to be married to Maude.

However, Maude has a surprise for Harold that is to change his life forever....

for all those EMO's, Hipsters and Goths who think it's cool to praise suicide, and roll their eyes at people enjoying life to the fullest, whack this in your Blu Ray player and just watch, and enjoy.

It is certainly a different romantic comedy for sure, and Maude thankfully does change Harold's world view, but there where times when I wished his mother would just grab him, give him a slap, and tell him to get a grip.

The cast are excellent, and although the film is very sweet natured, you can't help but get unnerved by the film a little.

Plus it features one of the best breaking of the fourth walls I have ever seen

Really funny film it was a combination of black humor and how something so depressing and morbid as death can be so romantic with some great adventures and antidotes to how to live and survive and find the fun in life and friendship whAtever the difference in age
