'A subtle, sensual, absorbing tale' Grazia 'A dark, Single White Female-style tale set in a Paris that is as seedy as it is glamorous ... An observant read detailing life's harder lessons, the careless disregard of youth and the silent desperation of age' Glamour 'Gripping ... an enjoyable summer read' Observer 'Harm's Way has given us the modern-day woman, immensely complex morally and emotionally. It is also utterly engrossing and intriguing.' Jung Chang

Product Description

I always think that if you walk around thinking you can have anything you want, you usually can.For confident nineteen-year-old Anna, finding men is easy, holding on to them unnecessary. Moving to Paris brings her a new job, a new life and a new friend in the form of a woman twenty years her senior, Beth. As they fall in love with the city, Anna is irresistibly drawn to Beth's warmth and charm. When Beth falls in love with an attractive Frenchman, Christian, Anna struggles to overcome her increasing jealousy. But who is her real rival: Christian or Beth? A sultry tale of betrayal and regret, Harm's Way traces Anna's story as she learns one of life's hardest lessons: that if you believe you can have anything you want, you may end up with nothing but regret.

No question, this is an impressive effort from a first-time novelist. It's an original story, well-paced and the dreamy, intensely romantic backdrop of Paris is evoked with some very classy writing. If you like emotion, atmosphere and passion, read it. And a word to the earlier reviewer who personalised his comments in a pathetially offensive way: these boxes are not intended for people to post ignorant abuse whenever they feel like it. They are meant as a forum for those with serious, honest opinions to express themselves. You should be ashamed of yourself.

A great read 30 Aug 2008

Format:Hardcover
This is an impressive debut from Walden. Having expected a generic piece of chicklit, I was pleasantly surprised to find this couldn't be further from the truth and the novel is in fact a complex, and often disturbing, exploration of the selfishness of human nature. The fact that it is set in Paris, so lovingly described, is a bonus and a reminder of the beauty of that city. I would heartily recommend Harm's Way to anyone who appreciates good writing and enjoys a good story.

A well-written book about Anna - a spoilt self-obsessed young girl from a well off family - having a gap year in Paris. Her uncle has set her up with a job in an art gallery. At first she's a bit bored with her own company, but one day she's introduced to the older enigmatic Beth ...

As Anna doesn't have much life experience she's fascinated by Beth's wisdom and together they explore Paris. Everything's fine until Beth falls in love with a French guy called Christian ... It turns into a love triangle with dramatic consequences.

The book is slow-paced and rich in descriptions. Yet there's tension under the surface and once Anna starts her affair with Christian you just know that Beth will find out sooner or later ... The way the author demonstrates this is unexpected and very clever.

It's not exactly a page turner, but has enough in it for me to want to know the outcome which luckily is very satisfying. Finally Anna has grown up a bit and understood something about herself and life. Both the prologue where Anna meets Beth in London, years after the Paris experience, and the epilogue where they have a final word with each other work very well.
