Product Description

London Review of Books

"Beautiful"

Book Description

Music is one of the oldest and most universal of the ancient Arts, yet few people understand what the elements of harmony really are and how they actually fit together, or sometimes don't quite.

In this charming little book, Anthony Ashton uses a Victorian device called a Harmonograph to tell the story of Harmony and the intervals in the scale. With useful appendices and exquisite line drawings, this is a unique and original introduction to this magical subject.

beautiful 3 Jun 2010
Format:Paperback
Beautiful book, a wonderful little read. Ironically though, I found that the older forms of similar experiments explored briefly at the end of the book more interesting than that of the harmonograph. Well worth having on the bookshelf for all musicians and I suppose mathematicians

Mind-blowing... 7 Oct 2008

Harmonograph: A Visual Guide to the Mathematics of Music (Wooden Books Gift Book)
I'm no mathematician, & the maths involved in this little book has bent my poor beleaguered brain into some weird shapes, but that's one of the reasons i like it so much!
As a wise quote from somewhere has it,
"The similarity between the words magic & music is no coincidence"
Quite!
A feast for the mind, & for the eyes.

A special find 12 Oct 2011
Format:Paperback
This is a remarkable little book if you are in to tuning and mathematical shapes. These work because of the harmonic nature of intervals and tuning (in unequal temperaments).
