good 25 July 2006

I really don't get why some people/reviewers put down this album? while stupid rubbish such as James Blunt and pop idol get praise for their lame efforts? Vanessa Calrton has proved to be an excellent musican and singer, this album shows that shes exploring, trying out things unlike other artists who like to play it safe all the time!!

I believe her best is to come and this album is just a stepping stone towards that :) give her credit for her efforts, I don't think this album is bad at all, theres alot of rubbish out there that get top marks in magazines, forget what they are saying, its what you think? too many people listen to the media and go with the flow

The other day on a commercial radio station I heard Vanessa Carlton described as a one hit wonder after '1000 miles'. This is so wrong. Vanessa Carlton's music is so different to everything else thats around. Rather than being a droney female singer with whiney, samey sounding songs that dont really go anywhere she has a lot of emotion but manages to put this into cleverly written up tempo songs that immediately grab your attention. I loved every song on this album the first time I heard it, and each time I hear it I like it more. She is such a talented artist, in keeping with many who get little recognition yet produce some of the most amazing works. Favourites- 'White Houses'- poppy and catchy, summery feeling,'Whos to Say'- thoughtful and melodic,'Annie'-bittersweet, and 'She Floats'- the sweeping orchestral strings give this track a mysterious yet magical feel. Its a shame this hasnt been properly released in Britain because it is so good, most of the songs would be hits in my opinion. Its great to hear something that isnt so samey like everything else thats out at the moment. Be Not Nobody, her first album, was one of my favourite albums since I got it, and Harmonium is the same, its never out of my cd player- love it.

ALMOST a classic 3 Dec 2004
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
First of all, i have to say what an artist this girl is. since 'a thousand miles' ive been a fan, and yet i was into heavy rock music at the time. It just shows how great music can draw u in.
The first album was surprisingly good, especially when she wrote it all (or most of it), and you can listen with joy all the way through it.

So i bought this and slammed it straight into my stereo. The first song 'white houses' was fantastic after the first listen, and is definately up there with my favourite track of hers.
The next song 'whos to say' is another favourite for me, as well as 'annie', 'san francisco', and 'afterglow'. 'Private radio' is the moment i look forward to on the album the most, its so upbeat and catchy, best song on the album with 'white houses'. Its after these first 6 songs that i was beginning to think the album was going to be a classic, however the rest of the album seemed a little disapointing compared to the first half. 'Half a week before the winter' is good, but i feel the album needed another big track before the end of the album, and neither 'c'est la vie' does this for me. 'She floats' is ok, but doesnt finish the album as well as 'twilight' did on the first album.

I'm not saying this album is bad, infact i love the majority of it. But to me i seems like it was partly rushed at parts. The first album had lots of brilliant drumming moments and great tone with guitars/orchestra etc, however this album sounds like something is missing. At times you feel like there could have been the odd guitar strum, or the base could have stood out more.
Anyway, for all vanessa carlton fans its obviously a must, and it is growing with each listen. Well Done Vanessa for some more fantastic songs to brighten up my day.
