A wonderful, sparkling performance,

I learned to play the harmonica in the 50's and Tommy Reilly was my 'hero'! It was my teenage dream to be able to emulate his style of playing. To me he was the most polished exponent of this very under-rated musical instrument and close on his heels was Ronald Chesney. Larry Adler, although an accomplished virtuoso, was more of a showman and lacked the polish and beautiful tonal range of these other two players.
I recently purchased this disc and listening to this wonderful, thoughtfully chosen, classical collection, which shows Tommy Reilly's awe-inspiring command of the instrument - especially the demanding last track - I now realise why I was so enthralled by his playing in those early years. I had forgotten what a beautiful sound the harmonica can make when it is played with sensitivity and by a virtuoso. My immediate aim now is to collect all the extant recordings. I shall be blowing the dust out of my 55 year-old Hohner chromonica and probably be responsible for the self-administered demise of my immediate neighbours in my attempts to recapture the 'good ole days' when I was a competition entrant at London's Central Hall in one of Mr Reilly's many competitions for aspiring, young players in the middle of the last century. I wholeheartedly recommend this disc to anyone interested in hearing the classical harmonica as it should be played - with joy, with gusto and with the romantic sensitivity of a true, classical artist.

A Nice Sampling Of Pieces Wriiten For Classical Harmonica,
By peter krampert - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Harmonica Concertos (Audio CD)
Tommy Reilly was one of that rare breed of harmonica players, the classical soloist. There have only been about a dozen or so in the history of the instrument who have really taken a shot at playing the harmonica with orchestras and these players are extremely special to the instrument. To date, there have only been a couple dozen or so pieces composed for the harmonica and on this CD, Soloist Tommy Reilly performs 5 pieces written for the harmonica.Tommy Reilly began, as most classical soloist did, in harmonica bands. During WWII he spent his time in a German POW camp recieving harmonicas from his captors. He used the time to perfect his skills and after the war he made his name as one of the premiere soloists of the harmonica. For anyone interested in studying the harmonica's place in Classical music, this CD is definitely a must-have recording. There are compositions by Spivakovsky, Arnold, Villa-Lobos, Moody and Farnon. Reilly plays these pieces with precision. this collection definitely adds to the scope of what the harmonica is capable of. 10 of 11 people found the following review helpful:

Tommy Reilly is very good and he brings the mixed reedy/brass sound of a harmoica to a professional level I never heard before.I didn't know a harmonica could be so delightful. The James Moddy Piece is my favorite I think.

Excellent classical Harmonica,

While most people associate the harmonica with blues, country, and rootsy-type rock and roll, masters of the instrument (particularly those who play the difficult 12-hole Chromatic variety as opposed to the smaller, more familiar 10-hole diatonic blues harps) have taken it beyond these fields. Stevie Wonder did this for soul and pop, Toots Thielemans in jazz, Larry Adler in show tunes, and Tommy Reilly in classical music.
Even those who claim not to like classical music will be relaxed and awed by Tommy's genius on these tunes. As is the case with the true masters of this instrument, he could trill quickly with harmonical pyrotechnics as well as move the soul with hauntingly beautiful slow tunes. Practicing harmonicists will bang their heads in frustration trying to copy the tunes on this CD, but everyone else will just listen and enjoy. |
