The Harman Kardon SoundSticks III

As a three-piece, 2.1-channel multimedia sound system, SoundSticks III brings a new level of excitement to music, games and movies to your home - with its exceptional sound clarity, enhanced colour scheme and bare minimum of wiring. Beyond its eye-catching appeal, SoundSticks III continues to be incredibly capable - with 40 watts of dazzling amplification, a down-firing powered subwoofer, eight full-range transducers and compatibility with all sorts of multimedia devices. As the sublime sequel to a prized performer, SoundSticks III is performance art at its finest.

Fill the room with eight full-range transducers

The Harman Kardon brand has a rich history of engineering sound with highly regarded results. The SoundSticks III system is no different. Powered by a total of 20-watts, eight full-range transducers (four in each speaker) deftly fill your room with great sound, while increasing power handling and audio output. With less distortion and better sound quality, SoundSticks III speakers ensure that you'll hear music or video exactly the way the composer intended.

Down-firing subwoofer with volume control

For a true audiophile listening experience, the SoundSticks III system also features a six-inch down-firing subwoofer with volume control that is powered by a 20-watt amplifier. By aiming sound down instead of at surrounding walls, your subwoofer makes your system less susceptible to adverse room variables - giving you a consistent performance. The subwoofer also has a flared port that reduces port noise during high-volume passages. This feature helps you tailor sound levels based on your room's specifications as well as your own listening preferences.

Connect to virtually any media device

Other than its stunning good looks, the SoundSticks III system offers excellent compatibility with other audio components. Thanks to its 3.5mm stereo audio connection, SoundSticks III speakers can be used with MP3 players, portable CD players, computers and almost anything with stereo line-level outputs. By offering you this user-friendly option, SoundSticks III becomes a nimble addition to your desktop, bookshelf or entertainment centre, keeping your life simple with a maximum of connection options - and a bare minimum of wiring.

Touch controls for volume and mute

The SoundSticks III system makes it easy for you to interact with your subwoofer and "sticks," offering sensitive touch controls for raising, lowering or muting the system volume. By responding to the gentle touch of your fingertip, this intuitive design feature makes your SoundSticks III system easy to operate, and keeps this work of audio "art" in the best possible condition.

Control the angle of your satellite speakers

Elegant and easy to use, SoundSticks III satellite speakers are designed to fit exactly where you want them - and maybe even in a few other places. As a modern design feature that's adaptable to your environment, the SoundSticks III system has two angle-adjustable satellite speakers that bend from low angle to high. Gently push or pull each satellite to the desired position - and you can optimize the angle at which sound enters, and fills, the room around you.

Attractive, high-quality audio cables

Some manufacturers make audio cables a bare-minimum expense, which can compromise the integrity of an audio product and, potentially, the look of it. The SoundSticks III system does no such thing. SoundSticks III audio cables match the high-quality, transparent modern design of the speakers in terms of quality and visual appeal - and live just underneath the transparent speaker covers as if being showcased. Kept in place by black connection beads, these premium audio cables ensure that audio travels from source to speaker, without any sign of degradation or outside interference. Their flexible design gives you the freedom to use the Soundsticks III with other devices that use an analogue output such as games consoles, DVD/Blu-ray Disc players, and TVs. And since they are detachable, they can be easily replaced if they happened to get damaged.

A sound plan for energy-efficiency

The SoundSticks III speaker system is soundly engineered for full compliance with the most demanding energy-efficiency requirements. It achieves this "green" standard primarily through incorporating a convenient on/off switch, which is built into the subwoofer volume control. This way, you gain more power over your power usage while keeping your satisfaction levels high and your energy bill low.

After hearing the Harman Kardon II's a few times from my friends, and in the Apple store, I was intrigued and wanted to give these a shot.

It's worth noting that this model is an upgrade from the previous Harman Kardon Soundsticks II. There a few differences:
1. Black base on the HK3 instead of the previous white. Personally I think the black looks much sleeker.
2. The audio cables are detachable rather than attached directly to the subwoofer. It's also worth noting that the cables are not detachable from the satellite speakers however.
3. Instead of the blue LED light that featured in the previous version, this one shows off a white LED light. Which one is `better' is down to personal preference, I like the white one myself.

Thoughts:

These speakers are really something special. The sound clarity is so accurate and crisp that I have noticed some of my songs in my collection have a `hiss' sound that I have never heard before, indicating they are poor quality versions. Furthermore, I hear sounds in songs that I've not heard before on my late Logitech Z-2300's. The louder you play these speakers the more beautiful the sound is. They are also superb for movies, the bass can easily be turned down preventing it from drowning out the vocals in films. Overall in terms of sound they are easily the best I've heard in this price range, and I honestly think they are not far off the Bose Companions.

In terms of physical build, despite the sensational design, no compromises on quality were made. They feel so solid and quality. The speaker's angle can be adjusted depending on how you prefer them. Just a word of advice, the angle of the speakers and their location can have a big influence on the quality of the sound produced.

I first purchased a set of these around November 2010. Impressive design and fantastic sound quality led me to agree with other reviews; the level of volume these can reach for such a small size, whilst holding clarity, truly is a pleasant surprise.

Unfortunately, around January 2011, I noticed that one of the towers was playing predominantly louder than the other. Having checked all the cables, plugs and eq settings on my mp3 player, I contacted Amazon and exchanged the damaged units for a new set.

It is now 1/10/11 and I have came across the exact same problem. A quick search on Google and Harman Kardon's website lead to the sad fact that this is not an uncommon fault. Frustratingly, I will now have to claim the manufacturer's warranty (1 year valid) and have to travel a round trip of about 70 miles to the only distribution centre in Scotland to have them 'repaired' or at best 'replaced'.

The true problem (other than the speakers lasting 7 months at best) is that the flaw appears to be due to a power issue, yet these speakers come supplied with a Sub and Amp, which only require you plug in and turn on; thereby removing any error with power wattages that may result from the user. I would place the fault solely with the manufacturer in this instance, who seem to be doing absolutely nothing with regards to investigating/remedying the fault(s).

By no means have I pushed these speakers to their limit. At best, I would say that they have reached 3/4 of their volume potential about 2 times max, so it becomes even more frustrating that the donkey work has to be carried out by me, the customer.

For the cost, the known fault and the lack of customer service, I would advise any potential buyer to leave these on the shelf.

Just set these up and very pleased with the results. Good clear sound with rich deep bass available from the subwoofer - a little awkward to adjust the bass response but once set I guess there will be little need to adjust it further so no great hardship. Only drawback is untidy wiring at back of subwoofer though if placed under a desk it won't be seen too easily I guess. Out of stock at Richer Sounds at £100 but PC World do them for £120 and they're well worth that.

First of all I do not understand why these are priced at £99 and there are a couple of versions around for £124 or something..I really cannot c the difference after reading the specs for the other models.

Anyways, these speakers look the part and most importantly SOUND the part. Friends will desire them with envy and the only disadvantage really is the lack of remote control to adjust the volume. But really these days when u can remotely connect on your laptop or use the phone to manipulate the sound WHO CARES!!?

When watching movies the sound is amazing. Doors open and slam like in the cinema, cars crash with a bang, planes are passing in front of your eyes and helicopters are genuinely flying in your living room. Concerning songs it really depends on the quality of the song. Mp3 they are ok but if you really want the bass to rock the party you need to go for FLAC files. They produce the best quality of sound.

Some users give them 4 stars because the sound is not loud enough for them. This is only because they do not know how to use them! There is not a MAXIMUM sound for these speakers that really depends on the quality of the file you are playing. You will never listen to these speakers scrambling because the volume is too much, BECAUSE THEY JUST WON'T, no fear of damaging them! You can easily connect them to your tv or laptop as they are using a standard 3.5mm head audio jack. Just remember before you do connect them; MAKE ABSOLUTELY SURE THEY ARE OFF, connect them first and then switch them on!

Lastly the blue glow on the main unit gives a bit of alien aura to them and the right standing speaker unit has a - and a + for the volume that needs barely touching in order to operate.
